REI and California Kayaks are two that I've found that have the intro & advanced classes. I need to take one also.

California Canoe and Kayak's classes are top notch, I cut my teeth many moons ago with their intro class in Half Moon Bay. Check to see what they offer in Sac.

If you ever plan to fish the coast, look for a surf zone class. It's a fun day learning to enter and exit the surf (plan to get a little wet...)

Agreed CCK offers top level instruction. IMHO save your money with REI classes and go for the real deal.

+1 on CCK. I taught intro to SK at both locations in the late 1990's.
When a shop has Tsunami Rangers on staff, you know they walk the walk on safety.

I am a NOOB.  20 years fishing tin boats in SF Bay and lakes but I have never fished off a kayak.
I want to take a class before purchasing my first  yak.
Does anyone have any opinions on the intro class'  Outback Adventures offer in Larkspur or SeaTrek in Sausalito?
I split my time between Novato and the foothills near Jackson,  so classes near Lodi or Sacramento would also work for me.

any info will be greatly appreciated.

Drop in to the new store in San Rafael on 2nd street (east side of 101)
It's called 101 Surfsports (415.524.8492). They are a group of great watermen. Cort was the National Champion Wind Surfer in Maui and Dave and Tom are paddlers. I don't know if they are doing classes BUT an hour individual lesson sometimes works better. They also Demo many different yaks W/O charge unlike some others in our area.

Try Claveys in Petaluma. Great shop. Btw, my folks live in Jackson.

First of all, I commend you for taking the class. Some newbies spend their time and money modifying their kayaks but skip the class.  :smt009

IMO, if you are planning on paddling in the ocean, I suggest taking a trip to HMB with Half Moon Bay Kayak Company or Monterey Bay Kayak. Besides learning the basics/ safety class, knowing how to handle your kayak in the surf (launching and landing - you can't learn that on a lake) and  Paddling correctly are skills every kayaker must learn. let them know that you are paddling on a sit-on-top. Both shops have ocean front locations which makes it very convenient for customers.

You can also contact Allen "scallen". He is a licensed kayak fishing guide in Santa Cruz - this guy KNOWS kayak fishing.  :smt045

* and just an FYI, These shops have been long time supporters of NCKA  :smt045

I was unaware of the shop in San Rafael.   I know of Clavey's in Petaluma.  I stopped by the shop in Larkspur the other day to check it out.
I will keep researching.  thanks for all the tips and keep them coming.
