You guys are overlooking a simple solution.

Don't let your children learn how to read!
I'm gonna watch myself. Good point Ron.

If the question is about style then the issue is simple. Good writing is good writing. Some writers, here and in popular writing,  choose to use profanity to fit our culture in context; however, it is not always necessary to make a point.

"The idea that no gentleman ever swears is all wrong. He can swear and still be a gentleman if he does it in a nice and benevolent and affectionate way." Mark Twain - Private and Public Morals speech, 1906.

The question of what others may think, including our own children is already answered by the evidence in prior postings. The norm was set as the site was shaped by its participants.

What we are also dancing with is a question of morality.

“The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it” George Washington

I believe I would have got along well with both Twain and Washington, as I believe language is an interesting subject. The conversation of why a word is considered profanity in the first place intrigues me. Morals dictate if one word is "nasty" and one not...all part of social norms...fascinating. :smt006
“This time, like all times, is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

+1.

The amount of curse words/R rated stuff on this site is real minimal...especially when compared to TV, the internet, going to a lot of adult dinner parties etc...

But that's just my opinion, and I totally respect Ron's point and every one else's opinion on here...

I try and keep my stuff clean, but sometimes don't either just cuz I get carried away (I'm easily excitable) or to make a colorful point.

To each his own IMO, and if my daughter was reading over my shoulder I would like to think I could use it as a teaching moment rather than tell other people what curse words they can and can not write on the internet.

I feel differently if the cussing is directed at another member or is insulting in a racist way or against someone's religion or sexual preference etc...that's an attack, but just cussing isn't.

Sincerely,

Jim

I have no problem teaching my kids, I just want the chance to show others the site before they see the questionable material.
If it's IN the post, it is the way the individual chooses to speak ... boys will be boys,
If it is the HEADLINE, than we have to wonder and question .... this is what we sell to new members, family, sponsors, bosses etc.
Imagine browsing NCKA (during your break) and your female CEO walks buy and sees the headlines ... What would she or anyone else say?
We are all adults here, we all have our colorful moments, lets just keep it in check .... Remember, It's a Public Forum

Yeah, I guess I don't see the difference between post and headline..if somebody is gonna judge me or NCKA on the basis of a headline then I really don't care about their opinion anyway.

I'm also not personally trying to "sell" NCKA to anyone, and if my boss walked by and saw me messing around on the internet it wouldn't matter if there was a cuss word in the title or not I would still get reprimanded for not working and for messing around on my work time.

Once again, I respect your opinion and your right to create your posts and headlines the way you see fit, but I also think that other members of this public forum should have that same right as well.

Sincerely,

Jim

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot,,,  I'm probably the worst of the bunch when it comes to my use of words.   It comes from decades of unchecked use of profanity.     Fact is I don't even realize it most times.  It's also a nasty habit that I regret developing , very difficult to stop myself now.    It's easy to slip out profanity while speaking,, but writing requires deliberate use.
Our children hear us,,, and  eventually begin spewing the same  speech patterns.   There are far more colorful words available to us.     I was working across the street from an elementary school last week and could clearly hear some of those little 6 yr olds yelling words on the playground  that  should never be used by children.    :smt009
    We teach by example.

So, I'm not saying censorship here,  This isn't a kids forum obviously.    But what sort of culture do we / you want to create ?
Sometimes the fish isn't the only prize.

Lol, this post reminds me of the naked 350 pound woman on the nude beach, it's legal but.....
I've been a mod on 3 sites, ranging from a family centered site that the owners of also ran a porn-specific photo and literature site. Try to use foul language and you were sent to a site called Purgatory and told what you posted wrong, it was funny and informative but a pain in the keaster, you had to tell the program 3 times to post your message. At a site for cooking the moderation required ALL posts to be read by a moderator before posting. The third site I moderated was a fish pond forum that was a free for all and a lot of fun but we screened the applicants and only accepted over 18 year old's. I know I'm new here but this is a great site and I think the self-moderation is awesome and I would hate to see it change.
Thanks folks, just my two pennies worth.
