I thought gas prices were supposed to fall as the election gets closer.  It's over $5.00 a gallon in some parts of SoCal.

I got a little bit smarter this time after the last refinery issues.  Gasbuddy put out a sort of warning that there was a possibility of a price jump coming up.  I saw it in the morning when gas was 3.85 and I planned on filling up that evening.  In the evening it was 3.99.  I was bummed but figured better fill up just in case.  Checked today it is now 4.19.  Next time, I read about a price jump, straight to the gas station to fill up.

So, I was just in the south of France last year... and noticed all the Big Makers all had their version of turbo diesels, Ford, Chevy, GM...  50 MPG  on their small SUV's...

They demand it, and they get it... we get environmental restrictions or maybe even some other more sinful conspiracy why we can have such vehicles ...

That would be a plus. Hope they get them here soon. I feel sorry for the young folks and the future ahead of them. Heck I am old 53? I remember filling the sportboat i worked on in San Pedro for 17 cent a gallon for #2 diesel at 2000 gallons a fill.  Dang.(1977) But then an offshore trip was 65.00 with a bunk and breakfast and fish cleaning for Tuna. Now its $300.00 they dont clean the fish and come home early and cancel if they only get 3 of the 4 to go and no bunk or even a place to sit.   I know the fuel jumps it up but when you fish 20 miles compared to our 100 miles stuff back then it seams easier these days with overall shorter running to the fish.. Enough rant that way. LOL

How is a family of 3 or 4 to make it these days. I talk to several folks my age and we talk about our kids and wonder if they will be able to buy a house, go to school, pay for a car and the 30 mile one way comute in a world of high cost and no wage growth.

We really don't demand it though.  Diesels really haven't been embraced in america (well amongst the car driving population, good ol pickup drivin boys love to roll coal).  The diesel option, from manufacturers that offer it, is a good $5-10K more expensive than a gas engine and people just really aren't into paying the extra cost.  Volkswagon's tdi models are boasting up to 40 mpg and, even with the cost differrences, are still reasonably priced; there isn't an army of buyers pulling them off the lots.

I'm guessing that people will be more open to them with gas prices going insane but with the marketing shift has leaned more toward  hybrid gas/electric cars; the majority of the population will still be looking that direction over diesel.

I do agree that the epa restrictions really don't help us though.  Bought my duramax sometime around 05-06 and filled the tank for about 60-65 bucks, filled the tank yesterday and $132.  My understanding is that Diesel used to be cheap to produce and that was reflected in the price, epa laws have since required increased refinement which doubled the price in literally a couple months. Diesel emmissions have really not been an issue until late....and they are more about taxation on a previosuly untapped base than preventing emissions.

Please dont quote me... I am not that big into Econ or government issues but from my understanding only in California we have 2 or more types of gas... At this moment we r switching from a summer blend gas to a winter blend gas. Now as simple as it is to jus do a switch over, there is a catch. The catch is because our refineries are outdated "they" don't have enough resources to make enough winter gas. So this rise in gas is to basically compensate for the refineries lack of resources to produce the gas. From what I was told the nations gas prices are down and barrel prices are down to double digits. But because California is a go green state we must have special types of gas... So this is temporary I guess.

I believe we are not the only  state that has tough gasoline law, but we the only one that constantly have problems.
I believe some how it applies to all: gasoline prices, state budget, education and etc. I could not find answer to my questions :(
