Just picked up a new rod and way too much $tuff from ODP :smt003.

Was thinking about going with the Cardiff 300A? Looks like it will hold enough line for a possible WSB landing. Its not too pricey and I have heard some good things. Just wondering if any one else had any suggestions/Objections.

Thanks guys, tight lines & bloody decks  :smt006

The guys at ODP rohnert park told me that a lot of kayakers get the trevala with avet sx. Super light but has a lot of power.
Im gonna get the same rod. still thinking on what reel im gonna pair it with. probably go light. avet sx or daiwa saltist maybe.

i have the trevala-s in medium its paired with a revo inshore spooled with 50 powerpro.the cardiff is a little under power in my opinion.its more of a trolling reel i think.i would go avet sx cost a little more but itll last alot longer for heavy duty salt
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Forget the Avets for kayaks according to Mike's Reel Repair. The reel is "naked" when in the free drag position allowing water to enter the reel.  Mine was toast but he repaired it with hybrid ceramic bearings and he said those won't even last long with the kind of abuse we (well maybe me) dish out. Great reels though ....for a boat.

Go with the Revo Inshore or the Toro

I put my SX's in free spool and rinse with fresh water IMMEDIATELY after getting off the salt, then leave them in free spool to dry. Thats what I do, hope it works.

Wow. Some of that is true but here are the facts.
1. The Avets do allow more water/sand to enter the reel compared to a Revo, Luna or Calcutta.
2. All bearings including "anti rust" bearings will rust if not serviced regularly.
3. If you don't maintain your reel, yak or boat, it will fail. It's only a matter of time.

I have owned an Avet SX 6/4 for 6 years of abusive saltwater kayak fishing including multiple surf wipe outs. In 6 years, I have only needed to replace 2 bearings. Other owners of Revo's over that same time period have had to replace more bearings and more extensive repairs. I do take better care of my reels than most but the Avet SX is my go-to reel for big game and I have absolute confidence in this fine American made product. If you don't want to take care of your reel, get a Calcutta, but even a Calcutta wiil fail after 2-3 years without maintenance. Why spend $200 on a reel and don't take care of it? Seriously guys, it's not the space shuttle. Go to Allan Tani's website and take care of your stuff. :smt006

I think the proper reel to use for WSB fishing is the one you have on the rod when a ghost shows up. Which is a roundabout way of saying lots of reels will do. I wouldn't obsess over line capacity, with braid and a kayak you'll probably not need to worry about getting spooled. You'll want a good smooth drag, but that can be achieved on most reels with good maintenance and drag grease etc. If you can keep the fish on for one or two powerful runs, you're gonna get him. You don't really need to cast, so that's not a consideration. The ABU Revos are nice, but expensive. The Avets are nicely made, compact, and a good price point, but still not cheap. I prefer star drag reels myself, because I find it easier to change the drag at different points in the fight. I have used the Saltists and Toriums as well...they will work just fine.

Your fishing success will be driven by time on the water, and good presentation...

Good luck!

I was gifted an avet sx (that's the smallest one right?) that is paired with a custom calstar rod. I baby the reel by keeping it off the rod when launching or landing, and I'm on year 2 with no trouble. I consider this outfit to be my "big game" setup, and am running 40lb braid on it.
I've landed nice halis and lings on it, but I'm still looking for the seabass....

the cardiff is cheap enough on the purchase, and its not a bad reel...i have one but i don't take it in saltwater.  I'm not sure it would survive too long in that type of condition.

I usually use it in the delta/rivers and i did use it to land my big sturgeon, so it's a fairly decent reel.  i personally prefer my revo inshore for the price..i got mine for less than $120 on ebay a couple years back.
