I try to make it down to S.D. for the Moyer tourney every year but it was cancelled this year so I decided to head down and chase some tail on my own. I contacted Ryan (killemandgrillem) who lives in S.D. and he put together an offshore trip with his friend’s 22’ Boston Whaler (Chris) for 9/14. You may remember Ryan for out fishing me, Etienne and Tim at Point Pinos this year http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=39209.0. Vu (drvoolittle) contacted me and joined the trip. Left Point Loma around 11 PM, picked up a couple of scoops of dines and headed south. We were headed offshore about 60 miles south off of Ensenada. It was a 6 hour boat ride and we took turns driving the boat and sleeping. It was kind of snotty and I have never driven a boat at nighttime on the ocean so it took an hour or so before I was feeling comfortable at the helm.  :smt010  :smt010 :smt010 We started trolling and kelp patty hopping at grey light. We picked up a YFT on a trolled cedar plug within an hour. Then I hooked a nice Dorado on a kelp patty on a dine. About an hour later we hooked an albie on the troll and I picked up a 35# albie on a dine on the jig stop. We worked the school of albies and had a triple hookup. Vu had the biggest fish of the day which was on the triple hookup, a 40# albie. I scored another 35# albie. We ran out of bait and used lures to work the kelp patties. Ended up scoring 3 small yellowtail’s, the last one on a Daiwa pencil popper. Had a little contest between the Shimano Waxwing and the Daiwa popper. Ended up a tie.  :smt011 All of my fish were caught on 25# Seaguar InvizX and my Phenix Abyss/Penn Liveliner combo http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=38641.0. It took me longer to land my fish but I got more hookups. One of the albies took me deep into my spectra backing but never close to being spooled. It really casts light lures and sardines well. My son lives in SD and Saturday night we had ahi and hamachi sashimi and mahi mahi tacos with 12 of his friends. It was off the hook. Those "firecracker" YT's were the best hamachi I have ever eaten. Better than the big ones. Special thanks to Ryan and Chris for organizing such an epic trip and Vu for representing NCKA. Life is good.

Great report Scott! Looks like a good time with good company. I bet it was a little strange cruising a little boat like that throughout the night in less than ideal conditions. Way to get out there and get it done!

Scott,  congratulations on a great fishing trip.  I lived in Carlsbad prior to moving to Danville but didn't discover kayak fishing until after the move.  San Diego is a wonderful place even without kayak fishing.  Thanks for sharing and the pictures.

I want to thank Scott for inviting me to this wonderful trip. It was an amazing trip and I was excited for Scott targetting his first bluefin tuna. It was a bummer that we caught every other fish except BFT but you can't really complain when you run out of space for fish on the boat. How often is it when you get disappointed pulling in 30-40# albies?? Overall, it was an amazing trip with a great group of guys. Would do it again ion a heartbeat if given another chance. I feel very lucky and blessed right now.

Great sampling of what the southern waters have to offer. Sounds like a great trip Scott. Did you even bring your AI?

Glynn

I use my T15 down there because it is a surf launch. Its usually not big surf, but big enough to get whomped. The most common Hobies down there are PA's and Revos. Never seen an AI at LA Jolla.
