those batteries only last about 2 years it probably has a short in it and will not pull any amps. you cannot test for amp draw with a standard battery tester just replace it I have a color fishfinder too and I only get about 7 hours use out of a full charge

duane out

I checked the manual and the input power is 10-35VDC.  It's better off if you use the 24V battery so the current draw will be approximately .85AH max.

I bought a 4000 mah battery for a electric model air plane LI-PO battery and a charger. extremely light and a charger for it. but this battery when charging you should be watching it. as it charges fast even from a car 12 volt system. They get hot when charging. but las all day fishing. THe battery and charger were a little expensive. but I like the benefits.

I looked up the Garmin 400c ,21watt power draw-1.75amps!
What a power Hog, color does draw more but that is a lot.

Damn! and I thought my Garmin 188C drew alot of power; mines only 0.72amps..... but it only last me 4.5hrs.

I now use 2  - 7mah batteries during tournies to keep it going all day....

Sonny,
How many AMH would the 24 volt battery need to be?  Any idea where I can get one for a reasonable price?

A 24VDC battery with 10AH should last all day for your FF.  Check link below:

Running a Shorai LFX07L2-BS12 7ah.  Only out a couple of times.  Starting voltages 13.36, after 5 hours  12.96.  40 minute charge time on 1amp charger.  Don't know if they drop off quicker after time, but like it so far.
Still need to add fuse holder and better connector on battery and charger.  Very light, maybe 1-1/2lb in box.

Lithium batteries voltage tends to stay high until they are just about done....

those are not 24 volt batteries. They are just two batteries set up to be 24 volt. You can buy two 12v 7am batteries cheaper than buying through that web site. Just pick up a couple of the free ones that keep getting offered on this site and you are good to go.

After consulting with the resident electrical engineer (Sonny/Sailfish), I have ordered another 12 volt  8AMH battery which will be connected to my existing battery with soldered connections.  This will create a 24 volt power supply that should last through a full day of fishing.  I'm pretty sure the two battery combo will still fit in a Hobie dry bag in the front hatch of my Revo.  Thanks for all of the analysis and suggestions.  Hopefully this saga is over!

First it's the Mirage drive getting toast, now it's the battery.  As hobie Dave would say "slow down Kimosabe" :smt003

Allan,  I'm still using the standard fins with the mirage drive and have had no problems for over a year.  I'm not always the first one on the fishing grounds or the first one on the beach after the fishing is done but the drive has been trouble free.  I think Sonny has solved the fishfinder power issue.  You need to get away on a week day and fish with us.  Don't forget to join us 10/6 for the "Board Meeting" at my house.

I have been using the 400C for several years and yes it does draw that much power. I originally bought a battery from Batteries Plus that was an 12V8amp and was getting right around 6-7 hours before it would time out or the screen would freeze up. I have used both the trickle charger Eric speaks of and the small automotive charger; the trickle charger seems to charge the battery better, it has something to do with the amount of time it charges which could be over a 24 hour period to fully charge versus around 4 hours or less on the automotive. I switched up to a 12V9amp battery a while ago and was able to get a little more power. I have heard about the superbike lithium ion batteries that are costly, but save a lot of weight and pack a lot of power. Here is a website I found with plenty of choices for power options.  Mike
