I remember many, many, many (OK, lots of) years ago that one of the requirements for getting a license was having to learn to use Morse code. Is that still a requirement?

No... I just took the "Technician Class" license test; which was 35 questions out of a pool of 100....

I am now studying for the next level "General Class license; which will open up more frequencies/bands....

then.... maybe I will try and go for the final level, which is the "Amateur Extra Class".

I just want to be able to communicate further than you can with a CB... in case I get stuck while wheeling in the back country....

Congrats Glen!  I've had my Tech Class License since 1994.   Not to active either since the days of cell phones and Internet came around.  Took and passed the General Class written test but never took the code test within the year.  Maybe I'll have to do it again.  You need to check out Echolink if you haven't already.    My call sign is KE6IIV.

My call sign is "KJ6ZPB" :smt006

I just put a 2m radio in the Jeep and was trying to re-install my old RCI 2950 in my truck... but when I opened it some wires came loose on a mod I did a long time ago and I can't find out how they go back...

trying to google search but I don't know what the part is called; any idea?

that's what I get for jacking around in it....

Got my General class back in junior high (1983),- KA6FLH- but haven't had a radio since about 1988.
I hadnteven thought about it for a decade, until this post.
No idea if that license is still good or anything!

Congrats  Glen,     I bought the book, studied,,, but never went for the test.   Kayaks started consuming all my free time.

If anyone wants the book???  I can pass it on.

It's only good for 10 years, plus a 2 year grace period; you will need to re-take the tests to get back your license....

If anyone wants the book???

Thanks Jim!!! Now you know what has been consuming my free time; healing and working on the Jeep, including installing an elaborate communication system.... Still waiting on my mobile cellular extender to come in.... wahooo!!!!!

Which book is it? Technician, General or Amatuer?
Also what year in it good for? they usually update it every 4-5years...

Grats Glen! Did you end up getting a 2m HT?

My K-wood D710A mobile stopped transmitting, been too lazy to take it out and look at it. APRS functionality is pretty cool and cross band repeat with a HT gives you a little security if you're in the boonies away from your truck.

I collected most of the parts to do APRS on the kayak but haven't done it yet. If you have a FF with GPS data output , all you need is a TNC, and a HT. Of course if you're on the ocean it might not reach a repeater but then if you had cross band repeat with a mobile in the car you could send it out on max power. Then anyone could track you very close to real time on a internet site like aprs.fi. When your altitude reaches -100 we assume you have been eaten by the landlord, LOL .Sorry for technogeek talk, thinking out loud...

OK,  I TOTALLY know nothing about any of this. Forgive the ignorant questions following.
Can't someone just buy a radio and go to town? I mean, is it like a drivers license where it's not an integral part of actually driving, but I wouldn't want to get caught without one sort of deal?

Kinda like a driver's test for a car; but no permit :smt044 if you don't have a license can't operate the radio (except CB and that family radio crap).

not an ignorant question at all... I thought I could do this to about 12 years ago, but:
a.) FCC rules state you are required be have a valid license to operate on certain frequencies; and
b.) I found out that most licensed operators won't even give you the time of day if you don't have a license.

I don't think I will be a HAM junkie, just for use to get out of trouble and with friends who have it.... it is suppose to work in places were cellphones don't.....

Thx! I started out with a 2m mobile unit for the jeep; a Yaesu FT2900R... still to FNG to use it... was planning on getting a handheld unit this week, but opt'd to get tires for the jeep first.... then I started tinkering with a old 10m unit the other day... (I really need to get on the water!!!!)

can you send me a list of repeaters and freq used in the area? and maybe if you have any for the truckee area....

I used that in conjunction with the online test quizzes... took 5 test per day for a week... I was able to memorize 80% of the questions. I just used that book to justify a question i missed....

gonna to the same for the General test....
