This is going to be TOP NOTCH EVENT and a great start to 2013...I'm so stoked,  thanks Vic and all the sponsors for your hard work and donations. Ricci...BTW, looking for a spot to crash Sat. Night at doran. ANYBODY got extra room for one more plus vehicle?

Bio Bill said he has room. Not sure what spot he's in. Also someone on the Lodi Paddle Club just posted that she had to bail and has a spot by the board walk available if anyone wants it.

The waiver for Crabfest is now up on the first page. Please fill the waiver out and bring it with you to turn in on the morning of the 27th. Waivers must be turned in on the morning of the event. Each participant will turn in a waiver and then receive a ticket for Grand prize.

If you forget your waiver we will have extra, but it will make things move faster if you bring one already filled out.

***Also, on the morning of the event please leave the Jetty Day use spots open on the far left next to the beach( about 3 spaces) that is where Dan and I will be parking with prizes and everything needed for the event. I will try and get Glen to post a map that shows the area that I am talking about. Also if you see a Tacoma cut in the line that morning its me, so please let me get the spot to set up***

With the upcoming forecast calling for marginal ocean conditions, it is very important that those of you who are not experience in crabbing from a kayak, take extra precautions.

Unlike kayak fishing, there are additional factors that may add to the hazards crabbing from a kayak. Not only will you have to deal with the added weight of crabbing gear (making you kayak more top heavy), but also the fact that you will be manuevering around alot more on top of it; reaching behind you to retreive your gear or pulling up a weighted trap will cause additional stability issues; that coupled by rough seas can make a bad recipe for trouble.

Please be sure you buddy up with a friend; and use the buddy system (2 kayak side-by-side) when setting/retrieving your gear. Dress for emersion, carry proper safety gear (radio, tow-rope, etc.) and stay within vocal range of your buddy. Do not exceed your abilities or the abilities of the kayak.

Remember: safety first, fishing a close second.  If there is a call for help, drop what ever you are doing and answer the call, raise your paddle in the air if you area in the air to alert others where the incident is. If you are inexperience at trying to recover someone, DO NOT attempt to try too (unless they're life is in imminent danger; get assistance by alerting others to come to the area. Once there is a call for assistance, keep the radio channel clear unless you are in the immediate area calling for assistance; listen for on the radio for details and proceed to the area. Too much conversion on the radio may cause confusion and hamper the rescue. First person onsite should call for assistance (identify yourself clearly so people know who is the person of contact) and remain as the contact person; second person onsite should take control of the situation, until someone more experienced arrives on site.

If the person needs to hold on to your kayak, because they are tired or while others attempt to flip his kayak, have them hold on the the bow of your kayak; this will reduce the risk of you flipping off your kayak and try not the stern where you can not see them.

Lastly, If you are the person in the water and inexperience at self-recover, do not waste energy trying to flip your kayak over; call for help, raise your paddle if you can and wait for assistance. Stay with your kayak unless your safety is further at risk.

Have fun; but be safe!!!

Thank for the tips Glen, but I am a bit confused by this one.

I'm gonna disagree on that one glen, but I'm just gonna say if you can't self rescue maybe you should keep out of the water.

Will address safety more tomorrow, but there will be over a dozen people on the water who are trained at rescues. That said we can't stop anyone from doing something stupid. Stay close, dress for the water, and always have a buddy. If you don't know how to rescue please come to the safety class Saturday. Will be the best couple of hours you can spend.

Thank for the tips Glen, but I am a bit confused by this one.

Most people can't flip there kayak over by themselves and exert alot of energy trying to do so; I guess if you can or have done it before, then it is okay. I believe it is better to call for assistance and conserve your energy. This one maybe debateable if you are  a more experienced kayaker.
