With bad weather predicted for the weekend I took off early to Davenport with the grey ghost on my mind. On the water solo before 7am taking a compass bearing for good measure as I headed into the dense fog on greasy calm water. The fog cleared and with radio, flare and phone reception I felt safe enough in the ocean wilderness and got down to fishing.
About 1 mile out I noted a little rip with a lot of eel grass. Lots of Common Murres but none of the bird piles and feeding frenzy activity I guess one is looking for at this time of year, and Ive noted before.  I drifted squid lines top, middle and bottom. Nothing doing in the WSB department as I am sure the experts out there would predict.
Just before 11 am I started noticing the wind line developing offshore and the first breath of cold wind. With too much shark week on the mind I started beating it to shore from 2-3 miles out. The current had taken me up and out, but I made it to the inside with plenty of time to spare and worked my way up the beaches back to the launch. By that time the area I had just been was a windy, white-capped danger zone.
After a half-hearted bottom fishing attempt on the inside I scraped back up to the beach and called it. Ran into some NCKA guys up the coast at the point and sounded like they scored on rockfish.  I guess that's what happening right now.
Got my prowler rigged for salmon trolling but I am 0-3 off the Marin coast, at least got the program down if it gets red hot.   I am new to the group but been fishing for a while, newer to the kayak part. So far I've been targeting salmon and wsb,  going right to the hard part I guess.
Always looking to learn from the ocean and other fishermen who study it. Would be great to meet up with some NCKA if the bite turns on.  Good luck out there during the calm days of fall

Davenport has always given me the heeebee geebees. I would not fish that area by myself.

good call to outrun the wind before its on you.  A slow bite helps make the decision easier!

yeah I used to fish there solo, but it just isn't much fun anymore. Still, with others it is a cool launch (and my favorite beach to chill on besides Bean) and there is good fishing in the area.
