Ey steph go check out the dive shop on pacheco ave out here in concord, they rent.

I actually just bought my wire stringer deal there last week and didn't think to ask if they rented out gear. They are right by my work. I will have to go back and ask them about that.  Thanks!  :smt006

Sorry Steph you are missing the most important thing about Ab diving and spearfishing. A Big Pair of Balls!  :smt005  Of all the people I have taken ab diving for the  first time, the most important thing after getting all the gear is to always remain calm in the water. I have seen to many friends get out there and not be relaxed and get into trouble. It takes a few times to get to this point so take it slow. Starting off just get the gear on and don't even bring the speargun till you feel really comfortable out there. An ab iron is ok since I love to swim around with that it feels like a second glove.  Start slowly diving around 10 feet in calm waters then progress as you begin to feel more comfortable.
Good luck
Jimbo

Jimbo,

From meeting Steph and seeing her out there slaying on the water she may not technically have balls, but I know she's got heart and courage.

 :smt001

Steph, when you figure out where to rent the gear let us know and we'll make a hook up to get you out there.

Jimbo is right though...staying calm and relaxed is key and starting off slow and mellow is the way to go.

I was thinking the same thing from her post of her ocean trip solo...

Nathan and I left the pole spears in the truck the first time we went out.  We dove San Carlos beach for about a half hour, saw big perch swim by.  We looked at each other and head to the truck and moved up the coast to where you can shoot fish.

So bring your spear, just leave it in the yak until you are comfortable.

"You have a stout heart, little Steph, but your courage alone will not save you "
"Are you frightened? "
"Not nearly frightened enough. I know what hunts you."

I found these nice quotes and it made me chuckle. I have a weird sense of humor but if you are want to tag along on a dive , let me know. Probably going to jump in the water this weekend if all works out up at Salt Point. Nothing like the fall to finally getting some great viz on the Sonoma coast

Thanks! And thanks for your guys input and advice. Does TC have lots of kelp or is it pretty clear? Again, still thinking about it but not sure I'm going to just jump right in on this one. I want perfect condition. Also, I know how to swim but I'm not a great swimmer when it comes to laps and such. But I can tread water and stay afloat.

I been thinking about getting into the water too. I lived in Monterey for a good part of my life and the closes I've got to spear fishing is wadding in the shallows in front of MBK before it was MBK with a frog spear. Don't know why I've never tried sticking my head in the water to kill fish but  looks like its time to get in on the action. Big Jim, Nathon, Andy, and Ernie(Mendohead) and the Master, Fuzz. Thanks for all the gifted perch, rockfish and Abalone given in the past.

I am now  and willing to be your Grasshopper!

Hey Steph,

You might want to consider a safety flag! Alot of people use them for on the water landmarks, safety from boats above. Highly visible when there is some swell in the water.
I sell the mounts!
