Went out for salmon a few times this week. Had some decent nibbles going on and lost one at the boat.  :smt009
Dpshim was nice enough to show me how he rigs with magic thread. I'm curious how you all do it? Single hook or double? Whole or cut plug? Threading through or fastened?
I would like to get out before the bite is done in monterey and justify my time away from the waf with some chrome. Pictures are welcome.
Thanks a million! :smt001

I could not get it done with 2 hooks at a fast pace so I was pre-tying a 5 circle barb-less hook to a 3 foot leader of 20 # flourocarbon leader....stick needle threw fish from back 2 front but just off to 1 side in the back...pull hook shaft into fish with hook exposed straight out to 1 side...do 2 half hitches and kind of cinch them into nose bone it helped with the pressure on my soft bad bait..that on a  a 6 oz banana sinker with swivels ....I reeled 10 cranks from bottom then put just a slight bend in the end of my rod , it was taught...STARE at the rod tip and tune out the world with crank in hand ...when it moved about a 32nd - 64th of an inch start reeling up slowly but speeding up a bit...if you feel the sinker bouncing it was a jellyfish bumping the line let it back down to bottom and reset .... if the rod starts to load in the least bit without the bounce, reel a little faster and start a rod lift ...it is  a SALMON..
My first week Salmon fishing  and just kind of figured all that out this week and many would probably  tell you it is  not how you mooch properly  ... I was ripping threw bait but I ended up with a 6 pack of Kayak Salmon this week and have over 40 pounds of meat in freezer ....HERRING in green packs use a soft tip rod ,I did not like how big my tiger stick was ...I was using a 7-5 med-hvy Bass pro shops bass jigging stick ..
Tight lines and good luck..

Why dont you guys troll?  Or is that too much work?

If Im mooching I use a 6, 8, 10, or 12 oz depending on the current or how deep they are.  I like cut plug herring since I haven a huge supply of large herring.  I use 2 hooks using a size smaller above the bottom hook Like a 4/0 and 5/0 octopuss hook or a 5/0 and 6/0.  I set my drag real light or free spool and wait for the salmon to swallow it.

Thanks for the great info.  I'm going to have to get out there and try again.  I had a solid bite on Friday but somehow managed to miss the hook set.  It was great fishing out there with everyone anyway.

I am new to salt water fishing and have never been shown the proper way to troll or mooch or any of this stuff, I do not know any of the little secrets  .I have just used my eyes , ears and fish knowledge and try to make a plan and get it done, seems I am always  outside the box.
I do not think I will leave the red can area for the salmon simply because in my Bass fishing opinion the bait is hanging around the biggest hunk  of under sea structure with years of under water stuff  growing all over it .I think that structure is the   cable holding the red can in place .. I am having nothing but success using that simple thought a bait , hook , weight , fishing pole  in the same spot every day , I can not change until I prove myself wrong and I plan on trying that again on Thursday!!!

Get em while they are there its not the norm.  I dont freeze my salmon otherwise I would have a couple freezers full.  I give mine away smoked or fresh filets.

currently been a bunch of jellies in the water, trolling would just foul up.  Plus the fish have been really deep, often 200 FOW.  Finally, for me, I just like the whole mooching thing, watching the bite, lighter rod.

I had no luck on Friday.  Lost about 20 anchovies.  I had plenty of nibbles but nothing would hook up and bait would be gone.

Went home that afternoon.  Looked up threading anchovies on youtube and found this video.

The next morning used this technique w/ 1 hook.  Caught my first salmon on my first anchovy and my second salmon on my third anchovy.

Hard to tell from the video, is he just using lite momo to wrap the fish at the end?  Doesn;t show how he finishes off that lite mono to "capture" it.  Snelling the bait to the hook?  Looks like it would work well.  I seee some posts about pre-rigging the bait.  Are you pre-rigging at home & freezing the bait with the hook & leader in it already?  I want some redemtion against these darn salmon!

I suspect he's using "Magic Thread", which has elastic in it. Don't know where you can get it locally - I have some which I used for sturgeon fishing. I'll keep my eyes open when I visit some local shops.

I was on the search for rubber bands as Great Bass had indicated for rigging on another post.  Checked a few local office supply places here in Morgan Hill with 0 luck for the size I needed.  One of the cool girls working at Staples suggested I hit Target in the hair accessory section for 'Goody' brand hair ties.  They come in CLEAR or BLACK and are about 1/2" in diameter.  Didn't get a chance to pre-rig or try them out this past weekend but they look like they may work very well.  Pack of 75 was $2.49.  May be an alternative to lashing the bait to the hook.

Castro Valley Sportsman's Center has Magic Tread right next to the cash register, if your in the area. I'd bet almost every decent tackle shop would have some. Its a must for fishing with frozen bait if ya ask me.
