Don't know the coordinates but it is the big red buoy off of Cannery Row.  Almost straight out from the Aquarium.  Maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 mile out.  Can't miss it.

I'll leave this to someone with more local Monterey knowledge than myself, but I honestly don't think this is a good first trip in the ocean.

I think a good first trip in the ocean would be Capitola or Santa Cruz, near shore. And if you've never been in the ocean in a yak, save yourself the headache and broken/salted/sanded gear... Leave the fishing gear at home your first time in the salt. Sorry to be the downer, but that's my honest opinion.

Not a downer at all AlexB :), I'm thankful for your honest opinion and I want it from everyone, we all gotta try look out for each other. Still doing some thinking, but  brewing with excitement from reading these reports at the same time, its fascinating..im def going to give lots of thought first. And if I go I'm going to def try and hookup with folks..have my rod, some setups prerigged..and loads of leashes and pool noodles to boot.

If you have some general experience with Kayaking, it isn't a bad first trip if the water conditions allow.  It just so happened that this weekend was almost epic weather for the MB area and there was hardly a 1' surf landing at the beach.  Another option is to launch within the harbor in Monterey.  A little extra paddle time and you may have to deal with the power boaters launching but it might save you from a beach launch.  The red can is hard to miss both from a visual and smell standpoint!  A GPS is HIGHLY recomended since it was clear as a bell around 5:30am on Saturday and by 6:30 the fog set in so you could be out there in nice weather and be stuck in fog with little notice.

San Carlos, next to the CG base is probably the closest. I don't have any GPS numbers for the red can.

I would love to join up, if there is room for one more.
Take some, but save some for later.

Of course there's room!  I'll be at Lover's Point around 5:30.  Launch at 6.

Josh,

Is there an intersection or street adress of this launch ramp/beach area?  Parking?

Thanks!

Bill

Intersection would be Ocean View Blvd and 17th st.  If travelling on Ocean View Blvd toward Pacific Grove you will take a right at the intersection and park down by the large Cypress Trees.  There is free parking on Ocean View Blvd. if you drive down a hundred yards or so.

Good to know.  Likes like it will save a little paddle time to the red can fishery from there.
