Kayaking with Kids?

I was hoping those of you with kiddos might chime in about your experiences kayaking with your children.  When did you start taking your kids out in the kayak? What did your set up look like? How long did they yak with you before getting their own yaks? Did you tow them behind at that point or were they ready to go solo? What kayak did you use as their starter?

Right now my boys are little (18 mo and 3 mo) so I do have some time. 

My wife and I have 2 OK Drifters. My 18 mo does enjoy going out on the yak for pleasure paddles. He sits in my lap and holds on to the paddle. Right now it works out well but as he gets bigger we will need to make adjustments. 

I have been seriously considering changing boats to a Cobra Fish N'Dive or Malibu X-factor so that I have a front facing jump seat. Seems like it would allow us to interact and help out when they are old enough to fish.

This is the beginning stage for me so I am sure there is more to consider. I hope that those of you who have "been there/done that" can help me out.

I think you are on the right track.  I started taking my son out about the same age (18 months). At the time I had a Hobie Outfitter, which was great because mom could hold the baby while I pedal and fish  . 
Now that my son is 3, he wants in on the action. I use a Malibu 2XL which works out great.  You can see how we use it here:

I also have seen another guy using a Fish N Dive with the Rear facing jump seat, which works out great when he takes his 6 yr old out.  I'm on the fence if I'll eventually go that route, or just have him sit up front of the 2XL ( he will have to learn to swim before I allow that)

Nothing like having them enjoy a day out on the water with you!

Thank you for sharing your videos.  That was awesome!!! Your son looked so pumped to catch his fish. How many other yaks can fit 3 generations of anglers?  My wife liked the spiny dogfish- she teaches bio and has dissected them with her classes.

I would seriously consider the Malibu 2xl for the family, before your video it wasn't even on my radar.

I am happy to hear that you started taking your son out at 18 months. Mine certainly enjoys it, but there are some who think its too early.
