I have been going there every other weekend or so & catching only one/trip, all small...  I use down rigger (a lot of work), but I (& many others) caught on three way swivel set up before.  Just use three way a foot down with 1-3 oz of weight & let lots of line out.  Sometime they come up on top 5-10ft, and you don't even need the weight.
Deep six (000) sucks for these small fish.  Never even pops & with the long line out you don't even feel anything (even in the open position)...  Roughster uses Jet diver, but I can't find the ones that dive 50ft deep.

Capell to Big Is is more like 4-5 miles.  Oak shore is closer but the park opens 7am & little walk to water if you don't have the wheels.

I think you can get them anywhere in the main lake but right now seems concentrated in Big Is to Ranch house...

Is oak shores even two miles to the big island?  I was there a few weeks ago and it looked much closer than that.  But yeah, the park opens a little late to catch the early morning bite.  Ricci mentioned parking on the road and wheeling in once, but I didn't see that as being a very easy option.  If you want to fish the later day, then Oak shores would be your best bet.

I have a hobie outback as well, I outfitted mine with a vise one cannon which requires no drilling and is removable. I put it right side near the handle. You will also need a fishfinder to really get afterthe Kokanee in any lake during the summer unless jigging. I am planning a trip out to berry very soon my my first Kokanee troll there, will pm u in advance to see if you want to hook up. Good luck

Thanks Motherlode def let me know when you plan on going out and I'll meet up with you. I will look into that Vise One cannon. I may also look into a Deep 6 Diver, if it can go deep.

Thinking about going either friday or sunday at dawn, still trying to determine a launch point on google maps, i will be leaving from Elk Grove in the am, let me know if one day is better than another.

Oak shores to the big island is around 1.5 miles+-. You'll end up paddling 6-8 miles trolling around all day easily.
I've parked on the road several time and wheeled to the water without any problems. I didn't think walking my kayak a couple 100yards was to hard.
They open the gate @ 7am

The last Kokanee I caught there won me a kayak.  :smt003  it was on a down rigger at 35'. I was stationary fighting a trout on my other rod. As the dodger/bug combo was fluttering down the Koke hit. I immediately locked the trout rod down in the holder and landed the Koke. Then went back and finished up the trout. :headbang: Adouble for the win.

Very nice! Sounds like you had a plan when that Koke hit lol. May I ask what kind of downrigger you are using? ( I was just wonderig.. The Outback has a pretty wide (gunnel)? I won a Big Jon downrigger on ebay, but it was one of them old vintage clamp ones, luckily the seller was able to take it back and give it to the last bidder, i was impulse buying for downriggers but if i do get one i want to make sure its a decent one.

Koke fishing is really getting to me. I think I'm getting the fever! lol

Quick and dirty description of how I rigged a Scotty 1073 Laketroll downrigger on my '08 Outback - I first shortened a gimbal mount so that it would only barely stick out of one of the front molded in rod holders.  The issue that came up was that the gimbal spun in the molded rod holder so I took a PVC coupler, maybe 1.5" or 2", don't remember exactly, and put it on a lathe to shave it down to fit tight in the molded rod holder and then drilled 2 holes about a 1/2" from the bottom and then took a stainless still pin and inserted through the holes.  After figuring exactly how I wanted the gimbal mount to fit so that the downrigger was at the correct angle, I gooped the coupler piece into the molded rod holder.

I realize this probably makes no sense, but if you can give me a week or so, I can pull the Outback out of storage and snap some pictures.

Yea it was kind of hard to picture but it gave me an idea. If you can snap some pictures of it that would be great. I've decided that the best method to use is DRs for easy and accurate lake trolling. I was leaning towards leadcore at some point but other reviews mention that leadcore only goes so far down (maybe 45 feet), so you are kind of limited if you want to go deeper. Thanks for your input dilbeck.

I launched from oak shore on the west side this morning. Paddled straight across to ranch house on the east shore and have been trolling since around eight. Nothing so far, variety of colors and depths. Hoping to find an afternoon bite. It was a long paddle but manageable in calm water, maybe four mikes across...

Good luck out there Motherload! What kind of lures are you using? How deep? Sounds like a good workout and just being out there is fun. Man makes me wanna get out there this weekend if I can, lol. Still trying to figure out how to put the car rack on my ride, old Thule. I'm excited for you. Next time you post your report I better see some fish in there lol jk.

Have tried between 44-60 ft deep hootchies in pink, pink and purple, and uv blue. Shoepeg corn tipped in a variety of scents. Nada
