Rob and HJohn made two valuable contributions.....having a pump is useless if it isnt accessible.  When I swamped my tarpon, the pump was in the hull and floated to a spot that a couldn't reach or see. That was the point where sh*t got very real very fast.

A valuable post. I'll be getting a pump before I go back OTW again. Thanks. Great teamwork.

I'm glad that things turned out O.K.
I got a pump several years ago after an experience bailing out a friend's kayak with a styro cup several miles out of Moss.
I keep the pump tied to the top of the back of my seat just above the pouch .  It's tied with slip knots in thin bungee cord so I can get it out fast, but it stays put and out of the way when I don't need it. It probably doesn't even weigh a pound.
I later actually had to use it one time when a slow leak left me rolling strangely and moving slowly not far from Capitola - and that's when I confirmed what I'd suspected: You aren't able to move up to open the hatch to get the pump out when the hull is a third full of water.
It's worth test swamping your yak and testing whether you can access your pump and actually get it into the inside of the hull without risk of taking on much larger quantities of water, and to see if it will shoot the water somewhere it will drain away.
In my friend's case, the leak was the result a poorly placed drain plug that hadn't been tightened completely.  In my case, I'd replaced a 6" hatch socket that had a rubber gasket  and ring with about 8 screws that I thought would keep all water out, but the rubber bunched up between screws and left gaps, and after hours of slowly leaking, the boat sank enough so that the water level was above the hatch, so the leak got worse.

Thanks for sharing the mishap Pat and that all went well in the end. I always carry my bilge pump with me where ever I go. I just finished making a tow rope with a float ball on one end of the rope. WTG Pat and Daniel for the quick response on the situation.

Not one person here so far has mentioned that you need to have ALL hatches closed tight except for a brief time when retrieving something. Then closing tight right away. I keep a pump available in the back tank well. Or in the paddle keeper. Kudos to you guys for saving the day. Pat, I would have you for a partner anyday. Not like that. hehe :smt008

Glad everything worked out!

I keep my pump lashed to the little scupper/column doodad inside the rod pod hatch of the T15 where it will always be within easy reach. That way I don't even have the option of leaving it at home.

Pump and extra paddle are always in the hull of the X-Factor, but I'm re-thinking pump placement.

Nice work, Pat and Dan, and thanks for sharing the experience.   :smt001

same here, my pump is velcroed to the hull in the rod pod.  Loading, landing and hauling have not had it move, but I suppose lots of water rushing around might.

Good points Craig.

I used to keep my pump in the front hatch thinking that if I needed it I would have to open the hatch anyways to pump the water out. After thinking about it some more I decided to keep it in the tankwell so it would be easily accessible if i need to help pump out a buddies boat.

I just have a small loop of paracord tied to the pump that gets clipped into the quick release swivels that hold my seat to the yak.

I do need to practice swamping and self rescuing with the pump. Anyone tried that with a completely swamped boat?

Me too, I have a pump but forget to bring it all the time.  Pat and Daniel, thanks for sharing your experiences.  Great job saving your friend.
