But of course!!!  :smt001

I subscribe to the "eager little rockfish attracts the big lingcod" theory too.  I tend to catch a few more little guys  and get a lot more little nibbles when I tip an iron like this.  I think the little guys are trying to eat the rubber and have a hard time doing it.  I will say I get very few sizeable rockfish when I do this, so I'm almost always targetting lings when fishing this way.  I did catch a nice 25" cabbie on this rig a few weeks back, the only one I can remember catching on a large iron.  When I fish a naked iron, I get very few rockfish, little or big.

I find that squid, soft plastics and irons all catch fish, and their effectiveness comes in that order too.  You'll undoubtedly catch more fish on the tentacles than any non-live bait.  I only break out the diamond bars when dinky gophers are practically jumping into the boat.

My tinsel jigs are about as effective as soft plastics too.  Lings seem to like the tinsel alot, but rockies also hit it readilly.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

I was thinking of adding some tinsel to the inside of the hootchie, like how they do for salmon trolling. Seems like it would be effective.

Allen, I hope you don't mind me trying out your B2 technique. Too interesting not to try out.

I just made these 'tinseled' hootchies this evening for use as assist hooks.

Josh, I've never seen one of your tinsel jigs.  Would you mind posting a pic?

I have one squid head left in my freezer...they make awesome crab bait, but I am hoping to save the last one for ling bait. I can't wait for July 1!

I can't wait to try out the tentacles. If any one else is interested in trying some out, let me know. I saved the tentacles from about 4 squids. So I have quite a bit.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Randy: It looks like some braid is connected to the hook and then crimped at the top loop? How is this attached to the main or leader line?

That's exactly what I was talking about minus the wire leader(?)...great pix. I'll have to try the tinsel this year.

Hey guys what do you think of this
I just got my diamond bars and then found this 9" storm wildeye
I figure it should get the big lings that like to hitch hike on the blues.
I cant wait to try it out.

Swim baits-Iron-Hootchie-B2 This stuff is all foreign to me. I would really like to catch a ling cod and I am trying to get ready for July 1. I would really like to see more pics of the set-ups you all are using including the weights (irons) I need to go shoping and want to get the right stuff. How about the baits for rock fish?
Thanks for any help.
Jack

Here's a pic of what's currently at the top of my tackle "bucket".

Top ... Salas 6X in scrambled egg color and a 2" B2 Squid in glow as a dressing.
Middle ... motor oil curly tail worm, skirted.
Bottom .... big ol' pearl swimbait.

All of these caught nice lings at Sombrio a few weeks back.  I'll usually reach for the middle one first.  Unless I have a live greenling, then that takes top honors.  Color preferences are motor oil, black, whites, dark green, and sometimes lime green (usually on a suspended school).  Everything gets tipped with a strip of bait, squid being the preference.

Here are some of my proven favorites....
I like fishing the 4 to 6 ounce Irons in deeper water (60 ft and over) and I like using 4 to 6 ounce jig heads with Bill's custom poured fish traps (black and orange colors) when fishing shallower waters - mostly pinnacles, reefs and boilers.

With the Irons, I like to add buck tails to 'em - IMO: they make a difference  :smt045

I've tried this 9 incher.  It looks really awesome and you would think it fished that way.  My experience was that it did not carry enough lead for such a large body.  Took forever to get down.  I ended up bagging it after two trips.
