fathers day is around the corner, so what is an adventure you have had with your father that just makes you sit back and smile, cringe or just flat out deny that it ever happened? one of my favorites is from spring 1994, the time my roommates and ski team members, had to get a break from a long winter in colorado of training and competing, where it was snowing 10+ inches a day for months, one of my waitresses at the restaurant i cooked at at night, was also a travel agent, and she hooked us up with a deal where we got one ticket for $90 round trip and the next ticket was $.01, and all the free drink coupons we wanted, so we flew to san diego where my pops picked us up in our 1972 suburban that was totally outfitted for baja, this was the rig i grew up in, traveling the peninsula, he had two 120 gl coolers filled with beer and we headed south. first stop was puerto nuevo for lobster, after a great meal at our favorite, and original spot in puerto nuevo, we headed down the coast to ensenada, where we were going to spend the night and then head over the mountains to san felipe the next day, we hit hussongs cantina for a session of beverages, the weather sucked, as some may know, the pacific side can be fogged in, and we did not need any bad weather, so pops and i decided to change the plans and head over the mountains that afternoon, needless to say, we werent in the best shape, so we head out through the slums towards hwy3 and the sea of cortez and the sun. as we were flying through an area where the road was barely one lane in the upper part of ensenada, pops decided to pass a slow moving truck, as we were doing around 80mph, yeah we used to pit for my uncle, who used to race score all the time, and we knew this section, we came head on to a garbage truck, lets just say, my team mates were very glad they were not sober when it happened, but were after, lol. after the near miss we headed east towards sun and warmth. as we arrived on the sea of cortez a few hours and many beers later, needless to say some bladders needed to be evacuated, as we pull over in the desert for a pit stop, freebird, the live version, comes across the cd, so here we are, 4 men, side by side, watering the desert with the doors open and the stereo blaring free bird, a warm desert baja wind blowing, and all of us singing, BEST PISS EVER! cant go into the rest of the weekend, but you get the idea, and lets put it this way, he didnt even stop when he dropped us off at the san diego airport 4 days later, we had to literally jump out of the suburban with our gear, lol, I LOVE YOU POP, AND HERE IS TO MANY MORE ADVENTURES!!! the pic is from hussongs before it all started. cameron

I have been fishing with my pops for twenty years and have enjoyed his own father son fishing stories. Like the one when he and his brother joined his dad for a full day of trolling in my grandfathers hommade wooden rowboat. My dad and uncle would fish while tramps paddled his ass off all day, needless to say he was one he'll of a Physical specimen. The story goes that while fishing my dad had to pee and had just about filled the can when he spilled the container into the boat, not wanting to upset gramps he just kept real quiet and prayed he didn't smell the piss. Losing his focus on the fishing for a moment he had allowed his line to bird eat badly... Again the strategy was keep quiet, don't piss off gramps, until wouldn't you know my dads rod tip slams down with a big fish, the only of the day. Dad does and says nothing a's he can't reel it in due to the birdsnest, grandpa starts shouting at my dad to play the @&$!&@& fish! To which my dad responds by uncovering his ungodly birds nest, grandpa grabs the rod and inthe excitement drops his cigar into the piss filled boat bottom... No fish, no cigar, no happy... To know my grandpa makes the story ten times for entertaining, my dad describes it a's one of his most epic tongue lashings ever.
Then years ago we took trip to lake Tulloch for some Kokanee on fathers day. A's a present I got up early to make all of the preparations. We leave the house in the pitch black am, and have almost reached the lake before the sun begins to break, at one point my dad looked in the rear view mirror and asked my in a surprisingly calm voice. "you put the engine on the boat right?" I said of course I did and looked  in the mirror myself to see a boat missing it's outboard. Heartbeat frozen i numbly look at him a's he pulls the truck over. Both thinking the worst had happened and the engine had fallen off some where on the highway we walked back to the boat. We where half right, I had forgotten to tighten the engine clamps, so when we left the house the engine was simply resting on the transom, when we hit a speedbump the engine (luckily) was bounced off the transom
And happened to land inside the 12 foot aluminum hull, slightly damaged but not the end of the world. Not a word was spoken between us a's he stopped himself from ripping my head off, an "I'm sorry" just didn't feel appropriate so i went with silence. We get to the launch ramp and I don't want to touch anything at this point so he does all of the launch prep, and backs me into the water a's the launch was crowded, I was to get the engine started  and returnt to the do k to pick him up. Well I paddled clear of the dock and was just about to turn to start working on the engine when I felt/ saw the water coming into the boat already ankle high.... No plug! @&$@!!!! I say loudly, causing everyone on the dock to freeze, a man on the dock called out what's wrong and I repeated no

No plug, sinking fast i decided to paddle back to the launch ramp while the guy on the dock ran to the end of the dock grabbing ahold of the stern and run/ dragged the boat into shallow water, the boat settled to the bottom
Of theaunch ramp with the rear of the boat under about two feet of water miraculously keeping everything important dry and safe. Whew!!!! I guess my pops and I were even for the engine debacle, we ended up relaunching the boat after hand bailing it and catching a nice limit of Kokanee, but it is a trip
Nether of us will ever forget!!!

My fondest memory of my father was when he used to take me crabbing at Fort Point near Crissy Field. We'd catch rock crabs left and right. Also, he used to take me to my local lake growing up where I caught my first fish, a 4 lb Rainbow. I've been hooked on fishing ever since.

Fondest memory of my dad was waking us up to go stripewr fishing on the bay when there used to be a bunch of them. We'd launch out of Mission Harbor then just anchor off somewhere and wait for the bite; it didn't take long. He passed a long time ago when I was just a young child but his "fishing bug" is in me.

In 2011 after a great day on the water in Seward I was wishing he was there to share the experience in person and not just spirit. Had a tear come to my eye. He was a great man, what little time I knew him.

Heading down to SoCal to see my dad this weekend. I can recall many stories, but one short one always springs to mind:

I was about 12, a summertime pier rat fishing with my ragamuffin pier rat friends. Fished all day in the sun with only live bait to show for it.

Around 5pm my dad saunters out onto the pier with his trout rod and a 1/2oz kastmaster, chrome I think it was. He takes two casts and hooks a 6lb bonita, which he battles valiantly, peeling line & screaming drag,  until we net it and haul it up and drop it into the bucket.

Dad says something like "Don't you be late for dinner now," and saunters off, trout rod in one hand, puffing on his pipe with the other. I was thinking "yep, my dad is a fisherman."

Now that all I have left are memories of my dad, I think about him every time I'm out fishing.

I can remember trying to follow my dad out to fishing trips when I was about 5.  He'd tell me its too dangerous to go out on the boat so that I'd have to stay home and I'd always be bummed out.  By the time I was 8, he would take me out fishing at least couple times a month.  We would always head out to the piers in SF and fish for sharks, rays, and whatever else would bite.  My most memorable moment with him is when I was about 9 and my dad hooked a leopard shark.  He then passed me the rod and it was one hell of a fight and a fight to remember.  It was the largest leopard shark we had caught at almost 4ft long.  I still have the picture in my room to this day.

He's taught me almost everything I know and I'm thankful I had the opportunity to fish with him while he was alive.

Happy fathers day pops!

Two great trips with my dad. One for his 70th B-day, out of La Paz and one two summers ago for his 80th, in Ketchikan. Mostly I remember him teaching me about fishing on our little river (north fork of the Consumnes) I would catch 2-3 and he'd catch 10. He has the touch. I think he got it catching Trout and Steelhead in Capitola Creek.
I'm hoping we can go fishing at 90 with his grandson! The Band of the Little River Men.

We had a family farm in Mindoro, an Island province among the Philippine Islands. I was about 10 years old when my Dad took me and my Mom on a vacation trip during summer break. The house we had at the property was very primitive and I loved it (bamboo shack - no electricity). We were many miles away from the nearest town  and I don't even remember seeing a paved road. We got to the farm and it was heaven on earth. We rode water buffalos (domesticated for farm use) to the nearby river bank, had lunch (using banana leaves for plates) and explored the jungle. It was my first introduction to the true outdoors.

THe farm is long gone now...the rebels took over the land  :smt011  But the memories are still fresh in my mind.

Thanks Pappy!

*He passed away of Cancer when he was 52.

My favorite adventure story with my Pop was in Michigan in the 60's. We went car camping in the dense forests of the Thumb of the lower peninsula. Set up tents and started a fire. Fire jumps the ring and starts the massive carpet of pine needles on fire. We all made a futile attempt at putting it out and my Dad finally throws us in the car and bolts for the paved road leaving our tent and camping gear to go up in flames. That was the last family camping trip. Rest in peace Pop!

I was a pretty bad kid, aren't we all, and my dad and I weren't too close.  He sent me to a "slave labor camp" deep in the woods of north idaho for about a year and a half..  I came out more of a man than I went in, and wanted to be friends with my dad.  So he took me on a 7 day river rafting trip down the colorado thru the grand canyon. they flew us into the canyon on a little helicopter, and we got to camp and explore, and hang out with eachother.  We learned alot about each other on that trip and I remember it fondly.  Happy fathers day!
