I'm in the market too.  Costco has the V3880 for $149 and that's the best price, for that model, that I could find.

Spend the extra on the commercial one by Cabelas.  It may cost more, but it won't break like crappy foodsavers do.  I have worn out a few foodsavers, plus they get tired after sealing a bunch while the Cabelas one doesn't plus it has a long and wider seal bar.

You could try e-bay, I have bought canisters in the past and I recall there were lots of food savers on their.  Also, my food saver gets used constantly and it is 6 years old, with no issues.  You have to wait in between suction pulls.  As far as sealing packs, we rarely use that function, as we have found the canisters, and and the ball jar adapter be the bombs.

+1 on Costco, we have not had any problems with ours, and they are the best price on bags we have found.

I'm thinking I may get the Costco one as well.

BTW, another option if you are on a budget is to get one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Johnson-Ziploc-Vacuum-Pump-Storage/dp/B001DRNESE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1339170373&sr=8-2

The bags are expensive, but what I do is to buy regular freezer bags.  Then stick the regular freezer bag zipped 90% of the way inside the ziploc vacuum bag.  Vacuum the air out of the ziploc vacuum bag, and it sucks the air out of the regular freezer bag as well. seal the freezer bag inside the rest of the way and you are good to go.

You got me thinking. Are you saying you just use the vac bag to get the air out of the regular freezer bag, and then remove it after sealing it? Or are you double bagging and freezing? I've pulled regular freezer bags under water to remove almost all the air before sealing and freezing. It gets most of the air out. Now you've got me thinking of trying one of the travel vaccum bags that you use a shop vac on to squeeze the air out of a freezer bag. Hmmmmmmm....

Yep,  so put the regular freezer bag inside the vacuum bag (don't seal the inner regular freezer bag all the way so the air can escape). Then seal and suck the air out of the outer vacuum bag, which will suck the air out of the regular freezer bag inside.  while still under suction, seal the inner freezer bag, then remove it from the outer bag, rinse and repeat as necessary.  It helps if the vacuum bag is larger than the inner ziploc.  Like I said, more legwork, but a cheap and efficient way to get the job done.

brilliant! I hate using the food saver bags for stuff we use quickly (chicken breasts, cheese) etc.

One question can you suck the air our w/o it sealing? I can't recall what options there are on the FS? I recall two buttons...on seal on vac/seal....do you have a trick to making is suck and not seal?
