Officials bust dozens of alleged abalone poachers

my local bait shop where i bought the tag punches holes in them for me , a knife works just as good to cut the tags and IMO the material of the tags is easier to write on then the stuff from a few years ago .


give these guys some real jail time and I'm sure the realities of being locked up will make them think twice. not no 15 days in county , I'm talking bout at least 6 months and so forth.

Glad the DFG is out there in full force, I wish they would do it more often. The poachers are all ass holes and robbing our state of a valuable resource for their personal profit and should lose their abalone diving privileges for 1 year  or more on the first offense, pay a huge fine, 150 hours of community service, and on the chance of a second offense, lose their ability to purchase tags, a 25,000 dollar fine and up to 6 months jail time or more depending on the number of poached abalone.

Cut out all the bull shi and give the wardens a 308 with a nice scope on it!! They see a poacher? Poacher and ab end up back on the. BOttom of the ocean. Ha ha ha where can i sign up for that job?

These new tags are a pain in the ass though.  You need scissors cause they don't tear off.  You need a waterproof super pen to write on the wet plastic coated paper.  Also don't forget your hole puncher device since you don't want to have a hanging Chad..  you should get all these tools to fill out the card when you buy your ab card.

I forgot who, but someone showed me a good trick, you cut the tags almost all the way leaving them still "pinned on" and make the holes first so when you get your abs, just rip it the rest of the way. works good.

Yeha I just fold the tag where I want it cut, and then pull the crease across a dive knife.. presto chango, cut where I want it.... and then spin the tip of the dive knife on the center of the hole and thread it with fishing line... not that hard...

JUST DON'T FORGET TO PUT AM OR PM on the tag I know people who have been nailed for that.

I just wish the wardens would not be so blood thirsty at the sight of a limit of abs. and question you to the enth degree assuming your insome way at fault, they jsut have to find it..... I got checked 3 times in 5 minutes while loading my car and the wardens who had already checked the abs were still there ab iron in hand as the 2nd and 3th checked my abs.... As the third guy checked my abs with the first 2 standing there talking to me, I told him if you hit the shell really hard with the ab iron you can make it less than 7 inches long.

As for the ab tags; I fill out my card then the three tags (big assumption there  ). After that I set my ab iron on the ground, rock, wherever is a little stable and then lay the portion of the tag I want cut on top of the iron.
I put the tip of my knife where I want the cut to begin and pull the card through. Poke a small hole with the knife, big enough to get the zip tie started, and I am good to go.
As for blatent or repeat violators, take their license away for life and in big bold letters tattoo the word 'POACHER' their forehead. That way if they are spotted with any kind of game a warden won't have to ask for their license and will know immediately they are in violation.
