If there is a market... some one will feed that market...,. Sucks, but reality is....
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

SERIOUS prison time for SERIOUS offenders.
It sickens me when a guy forgets to cross his 't' or dot his 'i' and gets a hefty fine compared to guys who are serious offenders in every sense of the term, scoff at the law, and get what amounts to a slap on the wrist for their crime.
And we all know that DGF is only catching a fraction of what is really going on.  :smt013

i think with poachers like this its maybe not so cost prohibitive to continue doing so. they got caught this one time but perhaps they have been doing it a lot and maybe in more / less quantities. if these abalone are selling for 100.00 a pop to people then they can make an easy grand in a day's work. much more if they are doing it a few times a week.

even if you took their cars, gear etc. away they will still make enough money to pay the fines so as long as they continue to do so.

i think the only way to stop repeat offenders is pretty much lock them up and put them away for a long time.

can these guys still get licensed to fish?

i re-read the original post and it said they had the abalone report cards. i guess they could still get licensed.

Wardens allege the two men also high-graded abalone, meaning they knowingly harvested far more than their daily limit of three, with the intention of taking only the largest. One seized abalone measured 10¾ inches across, which is an extremely large abalone.

- so if a diver comes up with large abalone does the dfg look at them differently?

I like the work program idea. Some kind of prison farm/salt mine where you have to work enough to pay for your stay there. Kind of a not for profit self funded rehabilitation program.  :smt002

I don't like the idea of poachers taking up valuable space in the general prison population. We have so many other violent or creepy people out there that i would rather be locked up and away from my family.

Abs for cash and now fish for crack what is this world coming to?  :smt003

Yes hard labor would be great for these two. Like harvesting urchins with their faces.

I thought their vehicles would get impounded with $25000 fine plus jail time.
Someone had said that to me a while back.

maybe branding them with hot irons would help. :smt013

that's just despicable behavior, and repeat offenders too.  :smt011
I'll vote for that, after branding, than permanently band from all types of fishing, hunting etc
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I notice last year a couple of times, some guys were launching their zodiac I'm sure they were ab divin but I also see them load up air tanks, now if I'm correct any breathing apreatus is not allowed on the vessel.if I was the harbor master I wouldn't have launch there boat.I was wondering where all the doul digit abs are,in these bastards pockets.

Correct, its not allowed but to really be sure they were doing something wrong they'd have to be checked on their way in and found in possesion of the abs with the air tanks on board.  There's still alot of bubble blowers on the north coast, they may have just been out scuba diving or hunting.  Could have also been the lamest of the lame....the few who use tanks to scout (terrain, fish and trophy abs) and then freedive at a later time.
