We had a great time at Paddlefest down at Monterey Bay Kayaks on Saturday.

Launched early, 5:50 or so, and headed to the outside edge of the kelpbeds on my flatty search.

Five kayak anglers paddled out to the spot about a half hour later.  Ed and Jim, John and Anna, and one other (Antoine? sorry)

Fishing was as usual there, find the rockfish and release. I got at least a limit including a few hefty blues.  One lng cod around 30", sorry no pic.

One Octopus that grabbed my ff and would not let go.  I unhooked him and let him crawl.  He went right through my ff case, and down and out the scupper hole.  It's amazing how they can squeeze through.

Paddlefest was great, talked to a number of new and experienced kayak anglers and a few that are eager to start.

One fellow from the condos down the beach told me he caught a halibut on Friday  SURFCASTING!!!  22"- legal-dinner.

I should have been working the inner edge of the kelp I guess, but I really didn't think they'd be in that shallow yet.

I'll get one soon.  Reports of halibut in Santa Cruz as well in the protected coves, and one new kayak angler I met at OSH last night said he saw a furbag eating a "big halibut" right in front of the Harbor yesterday...Garin, or Garon, Garen?  will be joining us on the board soon.  Shout out, man!

Yes.  I have a friend who likes to tease me that her boys have caught a nice halibut from somewhere along Del Monte beach.

Pat- I really think working the inside might be 'the ticket' for that spot.  I've heard (maybe from you?) that the shale reef ledges up staircase style, and halibut nestle in on the steps......???

Great to see you and Randy on Saturday and I can't wait to try my bony butt on that gel seat   THANKS RANDY!!!!!

Allen -

You're welcome!

You can pay me back by putting me on a big Hali when you find them.  Can't have Pat getting too smug can we?   :smt008

Chatter was real slow this morning on the radio.  There was one report on Coastside of limits out of Monterey (rather than HMB) on Sunday.  I am hopeful..........because I am just tht way......... :smt004

As of today, probably better to fish for halibut, jacksmelt or even striper than salmon out of santa cruz.

could all change by the weekend of course, and probably will.

If there is no surf next weekend, I will be kayak fishing in santa cruz, probably from the harbour. probably a halibut
attempt.

The salmon bite is picking up, finally.  Best near Pajaro over the weekend, though a few fish were caught at the Soquel Hole and other spots closer to Santa Cruz.

Check baysidemarinesc for daily PB reports.  could break open by the weekend.  Hope so!

Allen,
Thanks for the brief lowdown at OSH the other night. I sure am glad I saw the Prowler and spoke up. I told my brother Alex (from SF) about meeting you and it turns out he interviewed you for a paper he's writing! Small world... Last time out for me was Sunday (5 jacksmelt and some TINY kingfish) and I am itching pretty badly to get out there again. We'll have to hook up soon and snatch up some Hali's....or try our best. I'm sure I could learn some things. Thanks again. Garen

Hey- there you are Garen!!!

Great to see you on the board and great meeting you by chance at OSH....the way you were eying the Prowler in the parking lot my 1st question was "so, do you fish or what?"

yeah your brother, huh?  Nice guy I gave him a dramatic tale about paddling out at dawn and getting skunked.  LOL

We get out there soon together, I'm sure.  In the meantime stay on the board and post when and where you're going, everyone always loves company!

Welcome Garen,  :smt006

Some of the locals should be going out on Thursday morning.  I am still trying to wrangle my schedule to be a part of it.  Watch the Hookups section.

Hey this is Eric Adint I was the guy in the Toyota that bought the prowler 15. Is there any way people can post GPS coords of the fishing spots. Or at least pointers to map areas on Google maps, I don't have a fish finder and it would help to know the physical location for fishing. Im thinking about going out this Saturday, around 8 ish I don't really want to pony up for a Fishing license (spent 1600on kayak and equip) but I want to try out fishing as soon as I can. I hope some of the people I met at paddle fest will be out there.
