This is a basic ff layout.  You have the "head unit:" which is the actual screen that you look at. That is generally attached to a "mount" which tends to be bolted to your kayak.  Some people attach the mount to other types of removable/moveable mounts, but basic wise, the mount tends to be bolted to your kayak.  The head unit can be removed from the mount fairly easily.  Leading either directly to the head unit or with some of the more expensive units to the mount, are the wires/cables.  On a basic unit, you have a cable that is attached to the transducer, and a second set of wires which are the power and ground which power up the unit.  The transducer can be mounted many different ways, inside or outside of the kayak.  In your kayak the transducer is fitted to what we call a well.  Not being able to see it clearly I am not sure if it is a "wet" well - which requires you to pour some water into the well in order for the transducer to have a continual path to the kayak shell and down into the water, or if it is glued/epoxy/siliconed in which instead of water, the signal is passed through the "glue" and then through the kayak shell and into the water below.  For power, the ff requires some sort of battery/battery pack.  You will need some sort of 12v power supply.  Some use a 8 AA battery pack while other use a sort of motorcycle/lawn mower/model battery.  You run the power/ground wires to this power supply.  That is basically it.

What you have is the mounted transducer and the power/ground wires.  I didn't see if you had the mount for the ff.  You need a head unit that either fits the mount you have or comes with a mount.  If it is a compatible head unit to what you already have, all you would have to do it attach it to the mount plug in the transducer and the power line, come up with some sort of battery pack (add a in-line fuse), and you are done.

If you wanted to start fresh with a whole new set-up that has all the components, you would basically mirror how the transducer was installed but because they come in different sizes, you would probably have to replace the existing transducer well.  The wiring would be run just how the existing lines are.  The mount for the head unit would probably have to be re-done as they tend to be different for all the different units.

Can you do it.  It's not a hard install but if you don't have basic mechanical skills as well as general tools, then you should probably have someone give you a hand.  It also depends on how fancy you want to rig it.  Some guys are perfectionists and will spend a lot of money and time in order to make it perfect.  Other guys just want it working and dont care about appearances or long term risk.  Since you have a general guideline already installed, you have a sort of a blue print to follow, but you can always adapt it to your liking.  It's your baby now.

Thanks guys for all the good advice!

steveislost: Thank you for you very detailed explanation, I will try and see if I can do it myself. If not I'll probably a professional do it for me. Btw fish at the American river and caught a 34 inch striper around 7:30. It was awesome, had a good fight.
