Get him the Avet Sx.  It's only cost about $150 nowaday.

Try looking for a diawa saltist levelwind cheap heavy duty reels and he wont have to worry about putting line on while he reels in fish...or go to charkbait and check out the gray colored revo they have for around 119.00 . Some other options for you.

John if you want a Avet SX I have one that ChuckE sold ($150) me a few years ago I have never used it. It looks almost new and he said Alan T. went though it loaded with Dawia Braid has box and stuff. trade for your spinning reel does it have two spools?.

Thx for all the suggestions and offers. He lost 2 setups last year not securing it properly while paddling. Luckily the rod/reels were not expensive, but I hate to lose gear. So cost is a factor for fear of losing it again- although I did get him a leash after losing the 2nd one.

I got him an Abu 6500 C3 reel/Clarus rod setup today... with a leash.  Thx again for all the responses.

I'm still open to trade my Stradic spinning reel for something. Anyone have any rod or reel suitable for throwing jigs for yellowtail?

Peace!

Hey John:

It's old-school, kinda like me, but I'll trade one of my Newell's for the Stradic. I do like Shimano spinning reels.  I have 220's and 335's......whatever's most comparable.  All have been Tani-ized.

BTW, the Abu 6500 is perfect, just what I was going to suggest.  High Quality, holds a good amount of higher test line, casts great, and it's durable.  I ahve one blue one that I've used regularly for years.
