Ran my Lowrance M68C all day Sunday without any problems.  It tracks well, held a bottom reading the entire trip and is light on the battery useage.  No complaints about my few years of experience with this unit.  I wish it had a card slot but that's most likely why there's a new unit out now.

I was gonna get that fishfinder but,(yeah always a but)I was reading that using it to read thru hull you might get some interference.the're some people that say it works fine some people had reading problems.so I got the regular elite 5x.I think the down scan transducers are supersensitive, well that's what I read on some of he forums.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I hear you Kevin.  Nothing like saving up the gift cards to upgrade your fishing equipment.

I love the DSI technology but you have to be aware of its limitations too.  You have to be careful with the DSI models, because I believe the Elite DSI models ONLY show the downscan imagery.  No 2D imagery, and I like to have both in a fishfinder.  I was going to get the Elite 5 DSI model when it came out but after talking to a rep from Lowrance and the Outdoor Expo in Sac he explained that it only had the DSI imagery and was good to about 100 feet or so, so if you are trying to find the bottom below that mark you might have problems.

On my Whaler, I ended up getting the Lowrance HDS 5 and I love it.  Now I wouldn't put this FF on my kayak.  This year after I saved up my Fishermans Warehouse gift cards, I added the LSS-1 StructureScan to my HDS 5.  This allows for my unit to have the downscan imagery as well as sidescan imagery and let me just say, it is AWESOME!

I recently bought a Humminbird 587ci DSI. The transducer works fine thru hull. The DSI is nice for bottom structure, but in terms of mapping fish, the 2D sonar is still superior by a whole bunch. For example, I marked a small school of salmon at GS6. In 2D, I saw fish archs. In 3D, they show up as a few pixels. Maybe I haven't got it dialed in, but I wouldn't rely on the 3D except for checking on bottom structure. Get one with 2D/3D or just go with 2D, my $0.02.
