Wow... Well done.  I'm happy for the guy.  That's karma paying him back.
Damn... I need to go out and save a dog.  Last Monday at Shelter Cove, Randall found and returned Zilla's pup wandering around lost in the campground.  A couple ours later he caught and landed his 56# pacific butt.

Would you like me to bring my dog and let him loose so you can save him on the next hookup at ARW? (j/k)  :smt003

Excellent work. But I have to ask: barbed gaff? If not, then it would be a major bummer if the fish came off the hook and gaff. And it happens. Seen a bad shot with a harpoon wind up with a 100+ lb fish lost. Also had what would have been my PB come off the hook right at the boat - a fish in the 80 lb range.

I like these, attached to a buoy. Works a treat on fish to 45 lbs (so far, there's always the next Kodiak trip):

Congrats to Rory!

I just read his post over on NWKA, and 2 days later he pulled up a 50#er! Freaking amazing.
It once took me only 20 minutes to hookup, and most times have gone days with no hits.

He was using a shark hook for his gaff, with the barb intact. From experience I can tell you that it's important to have the hook very very sharp.

Here's a pic of one caught last year about 15-20 miles east of Rory's, in the Straits of Jaun de Fuca.

This something I threw together for the Memorial day trip last year. What you might miss under the duct tape is the snaphook that attaches to the eye of the shark hook. I have other buoys with line and clips that I can attach to this one. The shark hook is huge- 4-5" gap.

Sometime in the near future I'll upgrade this to a wood handle, so I can use the gaff alone for smaller stuff.
