Hi everybody,
Hope I'm posting this in the right forum.
Coming up from the Malibu area May 17-20 for the GF's B-day.
Got the ok to bring the yak :smt001

My fishing time will be limited being its her b=day weekend!
Been doing some researching/searching the sight for some intel.
Some google earthing to get an ideal of the area.

So my question is........

1.Should I head out and look for some reef and rock fish?

2.Or go south and look for stripers, salmon, halibut??

3.If any of the locals are going to be fishing would you mind a tagalong??

If I do get out weather permitting.
I'll be out alone in new teritory.
Any safety tips,do's and donts?

Thanks in advance for any tips and tricks.
Ron/Zuman

ZUMAN,
Well you did post it on the right forum considering you are looking for hookup, when it comes to HMB is not really forte, and I never caught a fish there.. :smt002 I am not sure of your paddling skills nor you fishing buddy, this site we always encourage safety first, the surf and wind in our area are always a factor, keep your eye out on the weather, I would recommend Santa Cruz Capitola as it just a few minutes away from HMB..it doesnt get really bad in that area..be careful read all the safety and the forum "this happened to me" thanks

I never caught a fish there.. :smt002

I have never come home skunked from HMB. :smt003 Unfortunately the Rockfish season does not open until June 1 for HMB if you are planning on fishing off a kayak. But you can always try fishing off the jetty, which is open year round.

If you insist on fishing off your kayak, I suggest trying Santa Cruz, Capitola, or Monterey.

Option 1 is out.  You'd be well served to drag the yak and little lady down to Santa Cruz/Capitola or Monterrey/Carmel for the day.  Keep tabs on the reports and if the salmon are in, chase them, if not you can plan B it for rockfish which are open (South of Pigeon Point is open for rockies).

Spend half a day fishing then hang out with her the rest of the day.  Lots to do down that way.....plus, the sun actually shines down there  :smt001

PS....you will not find better calamari than at the Ketch Joanne in the harbor.
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

Thanks for the replies everybody.
We're staying in a cottage ocean front at "Fitzgerald Marine Reserve",
in Moss Beach.

My Gf made the Reservation, when I checked the web site I was
stoked.Just walk out and do some surf fishing. As I read future and found out it was part of the mlpa/mpa,I was like WTF.I just lost my kayak fishing grounds(POint Dume)and my surf fishing ground(Zuma),thats where my name originated!!Fished that beach for 20 years :smt010.
I expressed my displeasure but understood this is HER trip.
Feeling guilty(I quess)she asked if I wanted to bring my Yak.
She's cool like that :smt001

So Rf fish is out.Did the exact same thing in 2009 Trinidad trip.
Missed the Shelter cove get together by one day lol.

Thanks for the suggestion, but going to stick to HMB.
If yaking doesn't workout,I'm perfectly at home rock hopping or on the sand.

DFG rule,I can rock fish off the rocks/jetty??

And off topic, any good hiking in the area.Nothing to strenuous.Maybe a secret water fall or something.

Good eats(sushi,clam chowder)?

Thanks again and sorry for rambling..................... :smt033

If you drive about 30 miles South on Hwy 1 to Bean Hollow - there's good rockfishing / perch from shore. You can also try going North to Montara State Beach for perch (about 5 miles North from your location). And just another mile North, you can chill and relax at Grey Whales Cove (watch out for Nudists) Parking is on the opposite side of the Hwy. (you have to walk across HWY 1 to access the beach)

And if you want some good food - try my buddys restaurant called Flavors - right across the Princeton Harbor.
