After a long day at La Jolla last week and losing a big WSB to the kelp I needed a change of pace.
Jumped on the Black Pearl Friday night and fished San Clemente Island Saturday and Sunday.

Weather was nice, a bit overcast and water is just starting to warm up.
Great crew and group of kayakers. We did a couple moves and found some hailbut, rock fish, sheephead, calicos etc etc.

Here are a few pics of the adventure:

Just missed the jackpot on day one and got it on day two, stoked to give it all back to the crew for their hard work.

Andy Allen, aka ICEMAN is putting these trips together once a month departing from Long Beach.
The fishing should just get better with the warmer weather coming up.

Take care guys

I'm heading down there soon, and I'll be hoping to see some of those critters in person.

We had one free diver on this trip. And he did very well, I think he shot 2 halibut over 20lbs.
the Black Pearl has a zodiac in the water whenever the kayaks are in the water, to come retrieve caught fish or deliver a fresh beer, bait etc.

here is a video Dave the diver put up from the trip:

Don,
you're killing me with the bloody butt pics!  You've been slaying those butts the past 2 months...

I'll be going on the Islander mothership trip to San Clemente on 5/18 out of San Diego- will call you for some 411 before I go.  thx for sharing.

I like big butts!

Nice catch, Don. What type of fish is that with the white tipped spines?

Is there more than one type of halibut? Looking at the first and second pictures on clip, it appears that the eyes are on the left side on one and one the right side of the other.

Nice trip!  Love those island halibut!!

Iceman is a very cool dude, been kayak fishing forever.  Gnarly and dedicated.

He's the guy in La Jolla who told me (after I lost a presumed YT due to my light tackle):

Thanks guys

Hojoman:
California Halibut are classified as a "right eyed flat fish" but they obviously come both ways, I don't pay much attention, maybe I will start

The other fish is a Sculpin, with some cool colors, they are usually redish-orangeish-yellowish where I live.

It a Sculpin or California scorpion fish, good eating but extremely poisonous. If the spines get you it's worse than a stingray. Won't kill you but it will ruin your day for sure. Looks like a nice trip.
