I need to take classes so that I feel safe and confident on the ocean. Weather permitting I’m planning on going to Monterey this coming Sunday the 22nd of April and taking the “Basic Skills for Sit on Top Kayaks” held by MBK.

If weather is a factor for this Sunday I will be rescheduling for the next Sunday where weather is not a factor.

The class is from 9AM to 5PM with a one hour break between 1-2PM.  It is a combo class with “Intro to Sea Kayaking” and the “Surf Zone” taught back to back at a reduced price of $110.00.  NCKA members are also given an additional 10 percent discount for this class.

There is a minimum group number of 2 kayakers required for this class and counting me there is a total of 1 kayakers so far for this coming Sunday.

So I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in going out to MBK this Sunday and possibly learning a thing or two that may someday save your life or come in extremely handy.

The information for each of the classes mentioned is below along with a link to MBK. Once again it is the combo class “Basic Skills for Sit on Top Kayaks” that
I will be taking.

Please let me know if you are interested in joining me for a beautiful day OTW.

Antonio

I've taken this class several times and it is excellent. Well worth the money for anyone who wants to develop salt water kayaking skills. Highly recommended for newbies and vets who need to refresh their skills.

I've done the class twice and loved it both times.  Been about two years since my last class, i'm going to see if they have one for next weekend if anyone else wants to join. :smt002

Al -

I might join you if the WX is good. Troll for salmon in the morning and get whooped in the surf in the afternoon.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 Sounds like fun.

Thanks I need positive feedback like this to get some takers. How does it look for the WX this Sunday?

I've checked already but really don't know the area and when it's not as favorable for beginning ocean kayaking.

Here is where I usually check the weather for the Monterey area.  Point and click on the map and you can get a forecast for just about any launch:  http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=36.615527631349245&lon=-121.87030792236328&site=mtr&unit=0&lg=en
This is about where MBK is, and currently the forecast is:

Sunday: Variable winds less than 5 kt becoming W 5 to 8 kt in the morning. Sunny. Mixed swell...W 3 ft and SSW 2 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

That may sound scary, but that is really a great forecast and the launch should be like a swimming pool.  If I wasn't going to BSSII this weekend, I'd probably be out there in Monterey trying my luck at Salmon!   :smt003 Keep an eye on it, I'm going to guess that the forecast will improve even more by Friday  :smt002

Thanks Jim for the insight on these classes.

Enjoy the weather and go sack em up this weekend.
Make sure you post some fish porn so that I can enjoy them at work when the daily stress gets to me.

I am a "go" for this class. What are the details here? Should I call them tomorrow, or...what? Let me know, because I've been looking into the Surf Zone class but have been turned off by sinking a Benjamin into a basic sit-on-top skills class that may or may not be useful. $110 for both classes and a day on the water sounds like a great deal. Either way, let me know what my next step should be.

Darren,

Thanks for responding to this post. You just need to call and talk to Cass at MBK. Do not schedule on line or you will not get your NCKA 10 percent discount.

I will send you a PM with more info.

Glad to hear that people are interested in these classes.

Even happier to hear that they are worth taking more than once. Kind of like CPR classes a refresher is always helpful.

Hope you guys enjoy your classes when you do decided to take them. I just don't want to lose sight that this post is for this Sunday 4-22.

Looking forward to meeting you OTW when I'm more experienced. Hopefully that will be very soon.

Thanks,

Antonio
