How does the rain effect fishing for fish in lakes?  I've heard it screws things up for kokes.  I believe it makes the trout bite tougher.  What about bass?  Does the rain kill the bass bite?  I'm down to sit in the rain for hours on end, but if the bite dies with the rain then why do it in the first place and waste gas right?  I know your not going to catch anything from your couch, but I'd at least like to learn how the rain effects different species.  Gas is getting ridiculous.  I'd be out Sturgeon fishing right now in the rain, but every single bait shop is out of Grass Shrimp.  Is there a species of fish that is better when its raining?  Or is there a species that you can have the same odds of hooking up with when its raining as you would if it wasn't?

So I guess here is the question that I'm really looking to have answered.

If it's raining outside, what is still worth fishing for?

Thanks guys, I know this might seem dumb, and a "just get out and fish" answer is what your probably tempted to write, but I'd like to learn from all your experiences.  And I'm also pissed that I've got the entire day to fish and am not today  :smt013

growing up back east, rain was a godsend for fishing.  You knew the bite was up just before and during a shower and down afterwards.  Of course that was on trout streams.

The best time to fish ...................... Is when you can :smt003

Seriously,
If you wait for the ideal days to fish .... you never will.
Get your rain gear on and go for it.
Might just have the time of your life.

I totally agree.  I guess what I'm wondering is; Would you switch up tactics for bass when it's raining, than if it wasnt raining?

In my experiences, the bite gets a little tougher for bass in the rain, but you can still get good fish.  Just check water clarity and fish colors accordingly.  With bass being in spawn right now, they are hungry.

This time of year the bass only have one thing on their minds :smt002
Find something to crawl around in the shallows and you will get bit.
Lite rain will not make much of a diff, but a heavy storm will drop the temp and could make vis issues.
If this happens usually they will tuck in tighter to the structure, so accurate casts around rock piles and timber will help. If you have trouble with the casting in tight areas you can always drift a live minnow.
Most bass should be in 10ft or less right now, if their not already on the beds, than they will be just outside the target area hanging near by.

Good Luck

What I've always been told is just prior to the rain, bass bite takes off (Cold front moving in turns on the bite)

Here is what I have learned. Its all about barometric pressure for bass fishing. This is a short note because I am working. In shallow water when the pressure changes it throws off the bass and it affects them. Mostly when cold weather comes around. The pressure does not have as much of an effect in deeper water. What I really like are summer days when a small rain storm comes in the bass really get affected then and the bite gets hot. So just a short note

If there not biting shallow right now go deeper.

I'll fish in the rain, but just not wind + rain  :smt044  Back when I was shore pounding EBP's for trout, I'd often go and fish in the rain and I recall doing pretty good with the usual trout crack sort of setups.  My guess is that when it starts raining the fish spook less since the surface is more distorted and there is food being knocked into the water by rain.  But, I dont really know  :smt044

Maybe fish done like getting wet when it rains  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

My vote, if it is raining which in turn is going to turn the water dirty, I would go sturgeon or catfish hunting or stay home and clean the apt.  This being the first day or rain I don't think it will have as much effect as say the end of the week after four days of rain where water levels and clarity are definitely affected.

I have yet to figure out fishing where there is one pattern that is a 100% guarantee.

Yeah, dirty water is definitely harder to fish.  But not all bodies of water muddy up after a storm, like the Forebay, or Quarry lakes, etc.  Some only muddy up on one side where the runoff enters the lake.

When I fished the docks at Shadow Cliffs, the best bite was when it was raining.  The harder it rained, the more  fun we had catching fish.

The pain in the ass about trying to fish our local East Bay lakes is, how the hell are you supposed to pass a Mussel inspection in rain?!? That's something I'll ask them next time I fish there.
