So, I'm bringing my four year old on his first fishing/kayaking voyage. I was thinking of San Pablo Dam or Laffayette Res.  I haven't had any luck in a yak there before, any tips would be appreciated. Lures? Depth to troll? good spots to try? Thanks, and of course, company welcome!  I was thinking of getting on the water around 8:30 or 9, but my son may not have patience for a long time on the water. Catching a fish on his first trip would be super. -Gabe

PM Daviator for info on SPD, and look up recent past reports for Lafayette and PM them for some tips.
Look forward to seeing reports of your son on some fish!  Happy Days.

Lafayette is very small, the only area to launch a yak is off the the docks(it is lowered for kayakers) the shore is mostly tullies/veg. with a couple of areas to shore land. The wind can be strong there, but usually not until 12. there are not many coves there to hid in. Trout are hard to find(fro me), but other do very well there....same trout lures:ShadRaps or kastmasters. There are big bass in the tullies.

SPR is a large body of water, with a lots of hiding coves. The area nearest the dam is the clearest water to troll in. See latest reports in the Members only and public reports.

local wind has been heavy and it is forcasted to blow hard again tomorrow. Good luck and keep your troll speed down= no more than 1mph.

Gabekap,

My buddy and I have ben fishing Lafayette every other weekend this year.  It has consistently produce fish.  In the last month we  switched over from bait fishing to trolling.  Baitfishing was working earlier in the year but it is not working well now.  Trolling seems to be the ticket.  We have several trolling set-ups that work but the best is just a dodger with a snelled hook attached.  The fish are mostly up high.  Bait your hook with half a night crawler and use some scent.  A short fluro leader (10 ft of 6lb) seems to help.  Vary your speed and don't necessairly go in a straight line.  Good luck and bring a big net.
