I don't know if this is really do-able but I was wondering if anybody from here is planning on heading down to La Jolla for yellowtail? I've dreamed of getting a yellowtail for too long now and am pondering the idea if I can find some people who are heading down there this summer?

Check out this website:  www.bigwatersedge.com

You will have to join up, (it is free!).  It is a wealth of knowledge about fishing at La Jolla.  There is usually a daily report about what is biting.  Yellowtail has been slow, but WSB and Threshers are biting right now.

I was stationed in San Diego for 5 years...A buddy got me into kayak fishing there and introduced me to the website.  Let me know how your trip goes.  I wish I could go with you.

Thanks BC. I've spent all the time since I posted the first post reading kayak4fish reports on La Jolla. I can't get out there til June and I'm just hoping someone I know off of here might be heading down so I don't find myself alone in unfamiliar waters with people I don't know.

Jim Sammons is the  guy I rented a kayak from when I was at a derby in San Diego. Nice guy. Another site to visit is Jason's site; he is also a kayak guide (http://www.kayaksportfishing.com/ ) For yellow tail, wsb, halibut, thresher, etc. Look for a poster named Rhino; he is also a kayak guide.

Another recommendation for BWE.  All of the LJ big dogs hang out there. Sammons site is good too, and he is an excellent guide.

I might be able to make it down there in June...possibly after the 25th.  My inlaws still live there, so it might be an excuse to go visit.  If we can make the dates work out, I'll go out with you, no problem.

I've fished with Jeff Krieger / Rhino = phenom fisherman - great guide - a very cool cat!  :smt023

I'm actually heading down there for Memorial day weekend + 2 days. My bro-in-law lives down there and is a yak fisher.
We will probably take another trip down in August...

The drive isn't really that bad- its only about 8 hours. Strangely, its actually faster for us (from marin) to go down 101.

Hey Steve,

How much faster is it down 101 verus 5?  I'm just finding it hard to imagine a windy road being faster than a direct path down the central valley.  I just checked for online directions and oddly, MapQuest gives the hwy 5 route while Google maps gives the 101 route, very strange indeed.  Anyway, I may try your route next time as I really can't stand the 400+ straight miles on 5, but always thought that 101 would take hours longer.

yah- its weird- 101 is actually mostly a straight shot down.  we probably save an hour from marin using it vs I-5.  The deal with 5 is you have to go way east, before you start that curve down SW.  i think that's where we save the time-- takes us an hour just to get to 5 (on a good day).

I should qualify that we go- 101-->280-->85-->101 to get out of the bay area, once in LA we hit 405, then 5 to bring us into SD

If you miss the timing and hit LA during traffic- you're screwed, but that's true of 5 too.

Hwy 5 kills me.....300 miles of straight highway between pacheco pass and the grapevine with like 6 exits in between and the place still gets traffic.  I take it during the off hours whenever heading south and for me its faster than 101 by an hour or two.  I get the added option of being able to cut over to parallel running hwy 99 if there's an accident.

When going to Santa Cruz from Redding it is faster to follow the 5 to los banos and cross over to the 152 then 156 to castroville. Never took a left tho but always wanted too. Drove back from san diego to alturas (13hours); took the 15 to 395 and never concidered the 5 just because there are 16 million people with cars that live very close to freeways there,  :smt002
