The cost is @$45 and worth every penny IMO.  Holding on to the sheet line gets tiring.  You can use cheaper cleats, but you get what you pay for.

I know... I am cheap and I like to MacGyver shit!

During my last fishing trip at Quarry Lakes I was with another ncka guy who likes to troll for trout on his Hobie Tandem with his sail.  Wind conditions were very gusty.

I took off early and when we met up at the boat ramp he told me he capsized and lost some gear.  I did not see it happen. I guess those ama's are great insurance.

I think I've got a couple new cam cleats (similar to those in the pics above) left over from my sailing days.  If someone's looking for one at a reasonable price I can take a look thru my stuff for them.

yeah that is the idea. I just can't stomach spending $75 on a cam cleat....There has to be a cheaper set up...I just need to keep looking.

You could probably find (or build) a jam cleat for a lot less.

How easy is it for a newb to figure out to steer and not flip over?

Figuring out how to steer and make u-turns with the sail takes some practice but is easy if you have an amas and a mirage drive.  The amas does a good job of keeping you from flipping over and and the mirage drive keeps your kayak moving as you catch that dead zone.  In case the wind is really gusty and you might flip, you can quickly release the sail by lifting the rope off the cleat that keeps the sail tight.
