The conditions leading up to opening day aren't lookin too pretty eaither.....braille diving at its finest.   None of that matters when your name is fuzz though....I heard he just stands on shore and the abs come to him.

Conditions look like garbage unfortunately. Be careful out there.
Anybody remember the 2008 opener? We'll still be talking about that one 20 years from now.

I have been out to many Sonoma coast openers and probably actually dove at 3 of them. I have been thoroughly entertained by many at Ocean Cove, Salt Point and Horeshoe. Horseshoe was the place to be in the SW swell. Flat always. Timber Cove will be diveable but if the S wind keeps pounding the rocksd the viz will be crap. It can change in a day though. Down by Jenner just north of it is a great little spot but the river is pumping brown water right now. So that will be poor viz. The opener is usually for the knuckleheads when the conditions arent prime.

Maybe he was thinking of 2007?

I love diving and all, but even I know my limits... will happily sit this one out and recommend others do the same.   :smt001

The abs aren't going anywhere and it's not much fun to dive in a washing machine of poo-colored water... not to mention plain dangerous.  :smt011

Thanks guys, I'll be keeping watch on the conditions.

In years past I had only dove Fort Ross, Stillwater, and Gerstle; now with Fort Ross out and Gerstle is often rough, I might have to venture further north.  Anyone can give some tips on Horseshoe Cove mentioned above (on stuff like gate/no gate, park fee/no fee, where to park, how to access, etc.

How about Timber Cove?  I heard it's private property and require a fee; does that mean anyone paying that fee can get in?  Tried to Google but did not find much specific answers.  Thanks a lot!

Wish everyone a successful season (that starts with surviving the season :smt003)!

As I recall, 2008 had a flat calm, crystal-clear opener for nearly a week. Definitely wasn't 2007 as I wasn't ab diving yet, but maybe it was 2009?
I guess if I can't remember the year, I won't be talking about it in 20 years!

Given the thread's context, I erroneously assumed you were saying people would remember it because it was BAD conditions.

2008 sounds like the ballpark.  I remember diving up there one opener weekend in crystal clear (albeit FREEZING) waters.  :)
