While I was out chasing Chinook salmon on Lake Almanor last week, my buddy Matt D was shorefishing around Big Springs.  He said the fishing was slow (one 18 inch buck rainbow), but he did get some sweet video clips of rainbows cruising the shallows prepping for the spawn.  The scene at 1:06 of a big male rainbow attacking a smaller male is awesome!

Hey Clayman are you local to the Almanor area?  I  live two blocks from the lake in Hamilton Branch.  Was on the lake last weekend seems like the rainbows are a little late this year maybe becasue  of the warmer than average temps?  Also have not seen the pond smelt in abundance?  Let me know if you are going out anytime soon.  Just got back from Basspro with my new FF and am trying to get it installed but would  be willling to take the morning sometime and get on the water.

Yeah man, I live in Chester.  Yep, the rainbow spawn is definitely later this year.  At this time last year, they were trying to spawn at all the tribs and spring areas.  Looks like they're juuust getting started right now.  This year's lack of precip and warmer-than-normal temperatures has definitely got me changing my strategies.

I've been marking schools of smelt every now and then, and saw a few cruising the shallows on the peninsula.  They too should be getting into the spawning mood, but they too seem to be running a little late this year.  I've been posting some reports on the Members Only section lately, I think you need at least 10 posts to have access to that board.

Sure man, I'm always down to fish with a fellow kayaker!  As of right now, I'm gonna wait out these storms before I go back out on the plastic boat.  Keep in touch.
