Wondering if anybody knows of a place around the East Bay where I can catch some leopard frogs? I need to stock my ponds up on the property and want to keep it native. Leopard frogs used to be there until the water sources declined. Bull frogs won't work.

Good luck Bigdog,
Used to be a lot of leapord frogs in my area as well.
Very rare indeed to see one today around here and I live in a semi isolated area away from most pollution.
Frogs are declining everywhere in the U.S.

Is that legal ? or do you have to get some type of take permit from the DFG?
Aren't they on some type of watch list?

As for looks, they are green with dark spots. All you need to catch them is a fishing license. There are some places where the red legged leopard frog is endangered. But most places are ok to catch them.

Here's a pic of a leopard frog.

I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild here.

When I lived in Maryland those things were everywhere.

Those guys were all over the place back in MN and WI too.  Haven't seen one out here though.

If you want tree frogs there's a pair spawning in an old aquarium in my sideyard.  ;)

The western variety of leapord frog I used to catch is more to the copper color with very vibrant red inner thighs, however it is the same frog.

Leopard frogs are not native to our area.  Around here we have two members or the genus Rana: 1) the yellowed-legged frog, and 2) the red-legged frog.  Both populations are in tough shape, the red-legged in particular.  Both species have been wiped out largely due to importation of non-native frogs, bull frogs in particular.  Collecting either species is a no-no without a special permit.

Yes, the non-native frogs, especially Bull Frogs have wreaked havoc on the natives. That is why I am trying to not use them. This property used to have leapord frogs on it. I am hoping to return them as I restore the water sources.

Bull frogs eat leopard frogs, hell they'll eat other bull frogs too.  I had a 5lb bullfrog living in a sump hole in my yard in iowa and it ate a robin...

Why not east bay vivarium, down near the old spengers building in berkeley? Might have to breed them. I think they are on 5th street across from the Nature shop, but acroos the street and north of it.

I checked the vivarian and several other places and they all had either bullfrogs or exotic frogs. I seem to be fighting an uphill battle but I am bit bull headed so I will keep on trying.

Is there a frog that eats snakes? If so, I'd like to get one as pet....and a personal bodyguard  :smt045

Agreed...but what I was trying to say is that leopard frogs (the kind you are trying to get) ARE non-native...aka part of the problem.
