I've been invited by a friend to fish the Sacramento River near Anderson from his driftboat this Saturday.  Trout are the target (and perhaps a bonus steelhead?).  I've barely fished the big river, and it was only for salmon.  My buddy's fished this section a bunch, but I was wondering if anyone on NCKA had any tips/advice for fishing this section of river.

I'm bringing both a spinning outfit and my 5 weight, with a variety of hardware, glo-bugs, nymphs, the usual river trout-catchers.  But I'm curious to know if there's a decent shot at hooking a steelhead up here.  If there is, then I'll bring my steelhead stuff.  Has anyone fished for winter steelhead in the Sac around Anderson?  Any luck?  Or should I just stick to fishing the light stuff for resident rainbows?

Rainbows will be your main catch.  I have caught some steelheads but they were more incidental than the norm.  They are there though, and I admit I am not normally targeting them.  My friend has caught them on pink worms but not as hot as some of the better known waters.  The water has cleared up a lot since the last storm so it may be worth a shot.

For the trout sounds like you have it dialed in.  Egg imitations are always good.  A great technique is back trolling mini quick fish and worms.  The tiny quick-fish, wobble warts, ext work great for some big trout.  Use the same set up as back trolling salmon, just smaller.  Worms with a little spinner above them on the leader work great.  I have caught a few on spinners while drifting.  The yellow and red mepps work well.

Good luck, I am sure you will have a great time.  It is a nice stretch of river through there.

Matt

Excellent, thanks for the tips Matt.  I've been scouring the internet for info on mainstem Sac River steelhead, and it's scarce.  But hearing that you've caught a few before is making me want to bring my steelhead stuff along.  Just in case  :smt003.  I'll try to pick up some mini-plugs too.  Looking forward to fishing some new water!

I know a married couple that swear by worms on a Gamakatsu hook behind a sliding slinky. The secret being, just use a piece of worm just a little bigger then a pencil eraser. Hope that helps.

x2 to what MattS said.
Best fishing is up in Redding, Posse Grounds down to around where Clear Creek dumps in.  I'm staring out my office window at the river right now, river is in perfect shape for a drift...tight lines, share pics!

Thanks guys, much appreciated.  I'll post a report on how things go.  Getting my river stuff put together right now...it'll be nice to fish some flowing water for a change!

I'd start with eggs and legs on the typical lower sac nymph setup. If no takers start switching out legs for various attractors and caddis nymphs, no secrets just switch out until you find what they are on. Steelies are usually incidental catches but if on trout gear in a drfitboat you can go chase them down if needed. Good luck, look forward to a report.
