My coworker just won a FLW bass tournament at Lake Shasta with an Alabama rig. Those things work. He's got a new Ranger bass boat to prove it.

Your coworker eh?  Cool.  I was at the weigh-in, and it seemed most of the pros that had big fish were using the Alabama Rig.  Guys had some VERY nice spotted bass, and if I remember correctly, all of the big ones were caught on the Alabama Rig.  I kinda have the urge to try it on Almanor smallies this year, just for the hell of it  :smt003.
