What does abalone taste like? I keep reading posts here about them, but have never had an opportunity to try some.  Wife is kinda courious as well.  I tend to think those things are just underwater slugs with a shell. Yeck!  How would you describe the meat, texture, and taste?

Magic ocean butter.

Seriously though...for me in all honesty...if you fry it, it tastes like fried calamari...not that big of a deal really....I like hunting them and sharing them more than I really love eating them fried.

This past season my family and I fell in love with Ab sashimi....to me it is delicious...but not sure what to compare it to.

Once you clean and trim, the meat is white and beautiful....when trimming I keep the trimmings that are a little tougher off to the side and eat those myself (still taste great, and just maybe have a little crisper/chewier edges), and just serve on a platter the melt in your mouth tender pieces from the heart meat.

Since I only made like 3 ab runs last year, all the abs I brought home were frozen for consumption later...many say freezing compromises the meat, and it does change it, but for eating raw I found I do not have to pound and the flavor is still the bomb.

Now the ab gonad...has a distinct nutty flavor!

Jim pretty much nailed it.  Fried calamari gets old quick, sashimi = good stuff.  Boiled = off the hook, just like eating clams.

On freezing, fresh from the ocean is way overated.  If you deep freeze them for a couple days you can prepare them without having to beat the snot out of them andteh flavor is still there.

It's the most prized seafood in asian cuisine, period. The texture is unlike other snails. We're lucky to be living in a place where we can catch our own. Chinese Lunar New Year is next week. I'll be cooking up the abs that I saved up from a few months back for this occasion. Perhaps I'll do a video on how to cook it Chinese style. If you're near Union City I'd let you have a taste  :smt003 But if you don't like shellfish, you probably won't like abalone either.

Never had it boiled. Do u slice it up first, like steaks? Any sauce or toppings? Wanna try it.

I pressure cooked whole Ab in chicken broth (one 32oz can) then slice it up and dipped it in Wasabi sauce.

I freeze it for a couple days to tenderize it, thaw it out, large dice chop then drop it in boiling water. Just over a minute and its ready.  Sliced should work fine.
I usually  throw mine in a shrimp cocktail.

I always thought it tasted  like a cross between a California Condor and a Spotted Owl :smt044

Its good but not nearly as good as most people rant and rave about,IMHO.I do like to  dive and hunt them ,but they really taste best to me when some one else cleans pounds and cooks them for me  :smt003

Abalone sort of taste like what it looks like:  bland white stuff.  It tastes like what you season it with.

IMHO, rockfish are far superior - especially when you factor in the work involved in prepping abalone.

It seems like I've wasted way too much time staring at ab guts when I could be looking at girls or something.  I'd rather catch em than clean, pound and cook em.

Way over-rated.

Abalone is over-hyped I think. But it does have a nice, mild, almost pine-nut flavor to it. Very mild though. In my opinion, it really is all about what you season it with. A good seasoning, and a camping trip with friends and your set. Also, people freak the F out when you give them some, that's one of the best parts for me. :)
