Every anchovy in the bag got bit today--shoulda taken two bags!  Hit Shelter Cove this morning after a rough bout with a 24' hour flu over the weekend--sorry we couldn't do it yesterday, Pescadore, because they got 'em then too.   :smt009  Next time for sure.   :smt002  I thought to go very early due to last night's call of 10-20 knots, but this morning's report was "variable" again   :smt003, so I rested my post-flu body a bit more and hit the beach at just before 9.  Started fishing in about 40' on the way out to the bell and had a light hit quick--it seemed more salmony than rockfishy--that was at 15 pulls.  I only had a line out more than 20 pulls once.  The rockfish were all up and down the water column--got a black at 3 pulls once even when I tried to get away from them.  Luckily there were salmon there too.  I landed, photo'd, released a shaker, more rockies, then, at the 30 minutes in mark, got a 5#'er in the net.  How nice to drown the skunk early.  More action for the next 20 minutes when I netted another of about 6#.  I thought about it a minute, decided that I wasn't ready to call it quits at an hour and that if I didn't get another one in the net it would be worth it to keep fishing.  What conditions--wow~!  It was a day to dive too, but I had to go get some work done.  I had several other rockies and salmon, but no salmon in the net again, until I ran out of bait--the bite was still wide-open at that point, so it was rough to leave--I didn't have an artificial with me or I would've stuck it out for another 30 minutes anyway...  At the cleaning table I talked with three PB guys out of Trinidad who had limits of 10# class--they had been about a mile farther out at 40' with lead.

Had to do the yoga-extendo Fish Sniffer pose to make this 5#'er look respectable, but it tasted great!   :smt003

The black rockfish were attacking the chovies.  13 pulls turned into the lucky number for a salmon, but the rockies would bite anything today...

gotta love the shallow bite! Do you guys ever think of fly lining? I always wanted to fight a salmon on 12# line without any weight to it.

Mooch:  I don't think of much unless someone drops it in my lap!  Sounds like fun-- it would be my dad's speed since he's the flyfishing expert...   :smt001

John M.:  Lurker ling is actually the black that just splashed me as I released it, but I'm attaching another photo with a cool lurker ling below a red from a couple years back.

CP--thanks for the compliment--it was a focus of mine to get good photos yesterday since my being sick had let Pescadore down.  I was having way too much fun!

Thx, all.  More and more I'm looking forward to meeting more people on this board--I like the community and the sensibility.  Those young PB guys I met at the cleaning table didn't seem too interested in talking to me, and there seems to be alot of that in the outdoors circles...  Their loss!   I think they were just jealous that I had big juevos for solo kayaking!  :smt003

Thanks for the nice photos......it looks like you were spending the day in a nice pool not the ocean.......... :smt045

I've sort of assumed that when the PB guys see me as a fellow fisherman they are friendly.  If they don't see that I am also working hard for a catch then they avoid me.........just my fantasy perhaps?
