Most 800w grey screen fish finders can be powered for 12-14 hours on 8 AA batteries.  More powerful units with GPS or color screens greatly reduce the run time on AA batts.   I use a 7.2Ah 12v that will power my Eagle Cuda 350 FF+GPS and LED lights for 40+ hours on a charge.  Haven't played much with solar stuff, but I imagine it would greatly extend battery life.
I got the same fishfinder, I  fish for about 6 hours a trip and charge it about every 6 trips. Vexlair makes batteries and chargers for Flashers and fishfinders that work great. I have even seen a 12v toy car battery used. My charger is also a battery tender so it is safe to keep it on days at a time and it has actually become more reliable then when I first got it 2 years ago.

What size inline fuse is reccomended?

Most FF ask for a 3amp fuse to be installed.... as close to the battery as possable.

For my Cuda it was 5amp, They are all different, I used a mini fuse so If I need to I can steal one from a car's fuse panel. Haven't blown it yet.

Sure post up what you used, how you did it etc.. Perhaps someone new to the site, will be able to use the information. (As you've done) I guess this could be viewed in some samll part, as a pay-it-forward?
