I've decided to make some changes on my outback. I would like to have two adjustable rocket launchers for duel trolling ( up front ). I currently have 1 ram mount ( no extension ) which is a problem, and don't want to use an extension. Also want it to be flush mount for loading / unloading. I know that scotty has them but I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to use the molded holders that are built in already. Thanks in advance and please post pictures if you have any.

I've only got one Scotty rod holder on an small RAM ball located up front.  Can't help you with the "Rocket launcher" style holders, (Don't trust them)

Hi Tim, I think the square Scotty flush mounts fit in the side trays on the Outback.  You can order them with the rocket launchers.  I really like them for trolling.  The advantage of the Scotty's is you can use the crab davit, camera holder, regular rod holder, ect. with them.

I have seen some neat setups with PVC heated and bent to fit the Hobie rod holders.  You could also check into the Scotty Gimbal mount.  It fits into the rod holder and allows you to use any scotty holder.  Trouble is you would have to use some tape around the shaft to keep it from rotating, as the hobie rod holder has a smooth bottom.  It would work with a little work though.

Why don't you trust them

Thanks for the link Matt, I will probably use the standard Scotty flush mounts to keep it simple and clean. I'm hoping they will work just forward of the molded holders due to the fact that there are no cables to worry about, and it gives me easy access to my up/down rudder controls.

I've trolled enough on my OB to feel the actual tension thats put on a rod while trolling, especially if one is using mini flashers, or a dodger.  I've actually held the rod before I got my holder, it seems to me that by using a "Rocket launcher" tube rod holder, there is going to be some lateral stress at the base.  I've had a rod get pulled out of the back (Rearward facing) built in rod holder on my OB that wasn't leashed at the moment.  Simple answere I think is I'm just old school about something holding my gear.

CGN-38, I have to trust my drag setting to prevent equipment failures, and I have snagged bottom several times while using a diver / flasher. I am concerned about a rod " jumping " out of a holder as I've seen it happen more than once. I could use a leash ( and have ) but would rather not. As I troll dual rods often on an outback and want to be able to see both rod tips easily ( without turning around ) the rocket launchers seem to be the best solution. It also gives you an advantage of keeping the lines spread out so they don't tangle during turns ( zig-zag fashion trolling )

I put my rocket launchers slightly forward while trolling.  This forces the rod base down and against the holder on a strike and keeps the line outward past the keel.

Even trolling dodgers and planer boards my rods won't slip out this way.  It is all in the positioning.  Yet they are still in full view and easy to access.

Hey!

Any updates on the rocket launchers?

I just got a new adventure and was looking for feedback on the scottys.

I did find a way to make a removable scotty base to fit in the stock outback rodholders. I used pvc fittings and the angles work out perfectly.

Would love to see pics of the final mounting if you have them.

Thanks!

Tok, the pictures posted By MattS in this thread are of an Adventure. Tad put some on a Revo. and loves them. I recently installed 2 on my Outback and they work great. I found that by sitting in my yak while someone held the holder with a rod in it that it would have been too far foward to have them anywhere other than the side trays.
( I'm 5' 9", but have a 6' reach ).  I will post some pics. when I remember to take them  :smt002

Some quick pics. for now, the only problem is the port side holder tension knob does interfere with the up rudder control. I just face the holder in the aft position to correct the problem.

Ummmm... Cant you just flip it around so the knob is on the other side?  If not, I dont get why...

Yeah Al you can, but then it is right at the point that it lifts out, I'd rather not take chances.
