Cody and Savana took hunter safety this weekend. Jeff-Iroelikethat joined them. They all passed their exam, and we boogied over to Bass Pro Shop for their licenses. I figured I would take them out for quail and turkey that afternoon. We got into some quail, but no shots. No turkey on land we could hunt. We saw this buck, the biggest buck I have seen in California. I did not have a camera, but I think Jeff took some pictures. Beautiful animal, only 30 yards away.
Back to the hunt. Well, we saw lots of turkeys, only 3 that were huntable, but I think they have been banged at a few times, because they high tailed it out of there!
Got home, and Jeff and Cody grilled up the chukar from the weekend before that I shot.

Racinrob joined us in the morning for a hunt at the bypass, and so did Mikey Rose. No luck on the ducks, so we went to Quail Point for their upland hunt and some skeet shooting.

Mikey raises Llewellin Setters, and brought one field trial grand champ, and a pup that is almost finished. Beautiful dogs, and worked fantastic with Pepper. Pepper excelled, and I put him right there with the best of labs, he is really something to watch work.
Cody scored first, with a nice rooster pheasant with his .410 single barrel. Rob then shot his first pheasant too. Jeff and Savana both smacked chukar and quail like seasoned hunters! Cody was makin it rain birds with his single shot .410! Absolutely amazing day, and undoubtedly, one of the best first hunts, I could have ever wished for my kids!

Tony, that kid is a crack shot with that little gun! I need to get him and Savana into sporting clays or trap. They love it! Thinking of getting both of them Beneli shotguns, 20 gauge for Christmas. I see a lot of shooting in their future.

Cody reminds me of my buddy's kid when they were the same age. One killing machine. I let Cody shoot first every time. He only had one shot so if he missed, I cleaned it up. I didn't get to shoot as many birds as I thought I would. Except one time when I could not wait. We both hit the quail at the same time. We tore it up a bit, but still eatable.

What a cool day taking kids hunting!  Man, i've only shot my shotgun twice now and this report is reminding me that I wanted to at least learn to shoot clays!  Lets do a hookup and do some sporting clays!  Thanks for sharing Rich!

EDIT: I also liked how you brought your kayaks anyways  :smt044

You bet Al! Let's plan one for after the holidays, I am planning on buying a nice thower, but have a had thrower that is really good for new shooters. I think Cody and Savana can hold a one day class to teach us adults how to hit the clays! Jeff was smackin them pretty good too!

Good stuff....I'd love to join ya sometime. I just need to run down and take the actual test and then get my licensee. Shot sporting clays a few times and had a great time. I have the Benelli Nova in 12ga. Fun to shoot for sure.

Al, Let me know if you wanna go out sometime down this way. Los Altos R&G club has self service throwers. And Coyote Valley Sporting Clays is just past Parkway Lakes on 101 (near Calero)

It would be awesome to set up a launcher, and throw them out off a bluff into the ocean. That would be a fun shoot!

That's awesome that you got the kids out there.  Omar has been asking me to teach him to shoot, this report might just push me to do it.
