So if you only get 6 abs for the year and dont turn your card in, they count it as 24 abs taken, so please remind everyone to turn in your report card so the #s are not totally whacked...

Thanks for the reminder. A buddy of mine bought a card and never used. I'll remind him to mail it in.
Makes me wonder how skewed the numbers are if they count unreported cards as 24 abs.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I contacted DFG about the above and after some clarification this is what I got form Jerry Kashiwada (DFG).

Dale,

Sorry I wasn't clearer about the whole process of calculating the total annual catch.  What I meant about not counting unreturned cards is that we use a sample of returned cards to calculate an average catch for returned cards and the proportion of the catch for each of the card sites.  The unreturned cards are not part of that process but they are included in the annual catch calculation by using several years of telephone survey data to calculate an average catch for unreturned cards, multiplying that by the number of unreturned cards and adding that to the total catch.  That calculation is similar to what you suggested but people who say they did not return abalone cards generally average one or two abalone fewer than those who say returned cards.

Jerry

Basically unreturned cards are counted as if they took the average of the returned cards, then allocated accross areas in the same proportions as the returned cards.

So if you're like me and had a quiet year (only 3 before the closure) it is a really good idea to get those cards in.

The address is
Cal DFG
32330 N. Harbor dr.
Fort Bragg, Ca 95437

It's at the bottom of the top half of the ab card.

I turned mine in at the DFG office in Eureka.  I asked for a receipt (just like last year), and the woman at the desk says, "Receipt?..." as she makes her way to a dated office stamp and the copy machine.  As she's stamping and copying another woman from an office around the corner says something to the effect of "why don't you just send it in like you're supposed to?..."  I tried to ask "what?" but 1st woman finished the 30 second transaction by handing my receipt over.  I wasn't real happy to be semi-scolded over asking for something that took 30 seconds to accomplish.  I can just imagine, if they lost my card, what they'd say to me, "Sorry, Mr. Stockwell, you should've gotten a receipt if you turned it in at the DFG office..."   :smt012

Ab report cards go to Ft Bragg.
Sturgeon and steelhead report cards go to Sacramento; same PO Box.
North coast salmon report card goes to Arcata.
Too bad you can't enter the info online.
I understand why we can't, it's just too bad we can't.

With technology where it is today, scan and send should not be an issue.

Have ya seen the length of those documents????????   :smt044
They certainly would not fit under the glass of my scanner.
I can understand them wanting to see the hard copy, the piece the fisherman carries with him.
Unfortunately all mine are being returned in pristine condition. No markings on them whatsoever.
It's been a sad, sad year of fishing for me. Not one dive either.
Keeping my hopes up for next year.

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

And after a lengthy conservation with the commission marine advisory the common theme is: we all want to see all the cards be them a abalone card or lobster card, sturgeon,etc, etc, returned to one location.............work is moving toward that direction.

Why did you feel you needed a receipt for turning in the tag? We dont get one when we mail  it in.  Maybe you know something i don't.

I have a paranoid mistrust of government agencies...   :smt003

Really though, if you're completing a transaction where you are required to act why wouldn't you get one?

Scenario:

- We're hearing that you can't get a new ab card if you don't turn the old one in;
- We don't control the mail or human error at the DFG office;
- We may be told, "Sorry, Charly, we didn't get yours, so you're SOL."

Not if I can help it.   :smt001
