I would like to join in on the fun and hopefully catch some crabs if I get some traps in time. I will also be bringing a co worker and will bring something as well for the potluck as well. See you there.

Hi,

I am new to kayak fishing/crabbing. I want to ask some silly questions:

1. I just bought 2 crab traps like this
   http://www.austinkayak.com/products/4995/Promar-Collapsible-Crab-and-Fish-Trap-32x24x11.html
I think I need a long rope so I can pull up the traps from water as deep as 120 ft. Where can I buy such a rope?

2.  When do you guys start to launch? If I come over during the day, where can I find you guys?

Thank you very much.

Depends on your location but west marine caries rope by the foot and many sporting goods such as sports chalet or outdoor pro have it in a pack called crab rope

I am in Mountain View. Seems that there is a sports chalet in San Jose. I will check it out tomorrow. Thanks a lot.

Thank you so much, James. I will let you know tomorrow.
BTW, when should I arrive HMB on Saturday? Do I have to sleep at parking lot friday night (will I get a ticket for doing this)? Can I come over in the morning? Then how can I find you? I am a newbie. Sorry for so many silly questions.

The paid parking lot is kinda a campground not sure about zonking out in the other lots. Look for kayaks is the best way to find others, I'm trying to get there Friday night If I can but my backup plan is arrive around 0630 Saturday and launch when I feel I can be seen well by boaters. My plan is drop my pots then search for Rockies for a while

Sounds good. Where is the exact parking and launching location? My understanding is to park at position A or along hwy 1, and launch at position B. Is this correct?

We will be in the parking lot C, at the Pillar Point Harbor;  because the lots are full of RVs and commie pots, we might be scattered or down by theHMB kayak rental area; its the over flow for the boat trailers , but  cars now park there too.

From the intersection of Hwy 1 & Hwy 92, go north on Hwy 1 for about 4 miles, then turn left on Capistrano; you should see a bazillion trailers in the lot on the left, that's lot C.

I should be out there around noon on Friday.....

Sport Chalet sometimes carries the Promar rigging which has the float and rope as a package. It's about $25 so many use pool noodles and parachute cord to save money. You only need 50' of rope for most crabbing that we do. However you rig them, make sure you dont have line floating on the surface. All rope should go straight down from your float. Floating line is a hazard for boaters. You can check the inventory online before you drive there. Make sure you are dressed for immersion and rain and have a PFD also. If you dont have a PFD, I can bring you one to use. See you Saturday.

Hey there,

I got the same trap from the same online vendor.  Make sure you add 2 of four & a qtr inch diameter escape rings per trap to be legal to trap crab in california!!!

Floating line is a hazard for boaters.

Saw a couple of pots out there last Sunday with like 50-60ft of rope floating on the surface, WTF? Near the entrance too.

You can go to the Redwood Trading Post in RWC if you go the paracord route. I went the cheap route, buoy's are a small pool noodle inside of a bigger pool noodle (end up being roughly 4-5"dia x 18")" with this kind of knot setup http://www.ifish.net/board/showthread.php?p=2777445. I made the end loops big enough so I can shove my paddle through the loop to catch it. I also carry extra lengths of paracord with loops in case I want to fish deeper, then I just do a loop to loop to connection to add more length. My stuff is all modular; lines, buoys, traps, weights. This makes storage on the kayak a little easier, especially if you are trying to take out fishing gear too.

I'll be out there...wishing everyone a "Code Blue" kinda day.....hehe

That's my take on it as well  :smt002 I also made everything from harnesses, bait holders, ropes, floats, etc.  I've got a system ;)
