What do you consider local? I don't shop at west Marine anymore but when I had a sail&PB I lived there, didn't they start out local in Palo Alto?
When a local shop sets up a website and sells on the internet are they still considered local?
Hook One supports this site and they are not local I believe they are internet only?

Good questions Mike. I consider local to be a company that employs local people. I'm sure the two kayak establishments list farther above are great people to do business with, but neither are local for me. There's a WM 8 miles from my house. I rarely buy anything from them, but they should be considered a local business. They employ local people (in my town) that need work.

I've bought four kayaks from a local Sacramento kayak shop (that I go to first), two from Cabelas and two from REI. All three offered good customer service. The two "Big Box" stores offered much better pricing for the purchases made. BTW, "Big Box" REI is also in my home town and employs a lot of good, local people.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm all for supporting local. Please do it whenever possible. I also advise shopping around and making smart purchases.

Another thing about specialty paddlesports shops is that they are dedicated to paddlesports year-round and thus sell the gear year round.  The big box stores rarely have stock in the Fall and Winter and they almost never have those hard to find specialty items.

If you support us we will be around to support you.  Last month someone from NCKA called on the same day that he was leaving to go to the Red Barn Classic because his side carry handle broke off that morning on his X-Factor.  We had the handle in stock and he was off to the event in no time.  We were glad to be there for him and he even got the NCKA 10% discount.  We also threw in some smiles for free :smt001 :smt002 .  What a deal!
