Malaysia is a great place to get crabs !

I'll ask around and look for it. I don't think it would be as good as ours though but will surely give it a try. I heard their fish curry is superb.
I think kayakjack was talking about a diffrent kind of crabs  :smt044

Haha that's awesome, I've got a couple great Navy stories about Malaysian crabs, fish tacos and some local rice-booze! Next time were around the camp fire...

Darius, sorry bro I'm going to miss the opener also.  I won't be looking for crabs where I'm going.  Hope you guys catch a lot of crabs of the right kind.  :smt003

Rope length: as a general  rule, you should add an additional 25% of line for the the you are fishing (crabbing).

Weight: you should use the minimum amount of weight needed to keep the top 25% of line from floating;  anymore just adds to your buy duck-diving and harder to spot in swell.

# of pots: I have personal dropped as many as 24 pots in a season; 12 shallow (150') and 12 deep (+200'). I think the limit for sport fisherman is60; but why would anyone person need that many?

Location: dungies like sand and mud, so you should target these areas. If you get Rockies(rock crab) in you pot, you are to close to a reef. Remember, dungies and Rockies are mortal enemies and live in two different terrain, if you get Rockies, move your pot! Unless you want them, some say the meat is actually sweeter than dungies.

Bait: basically any protein based bait will a tract crab, some work better than others. The oiler the baits make a better scent trail. We use chopped sardines and squid in a bait jar with holes as an attractant; keep it as frozen as possible when you deploy the pot, that way you don't waste the scent trail when  the the pot is dropping to the bottom. In addition, you also may want to put some whole bait in the pot to keep the guest dining until you pull the pot; this is extremely important when using hoop nets, since here is know way to keep them from departing.

Lastly, since the dfg rules aren't entirely clear on when you are permitted to drop your pots, we really should not attempt to test the system by dropping any earlier then midnite on the opening day. The last thing we want dfg is to rewrite the regs for dungie fishing and  putting more restrictions than we currently have. There is more than enough crabs to get an easy limit in a 3 hr soak. Dungy fishing is a 5 year cycle, last year was the first year of that cycle; soso this being the second year of the cycle, crabbing should still be good!

Hope this helps!

(Disclaimer: this knowledge is based on my experiences crabbing from my power boat ; we'll see how well it works when I cross over as a yak-crabber!)

Note from the picture from Glen.  If you get that much crabs in your pot there is no way you can pull it up from your kayak.  I know I can't.  It's possible if you soak it to long.  Glen, I like your crab puller.  Are we going to install it on my PB?  How about if we plan to go 11/12 and 11/13?  Should we setup another hookup at HMB?

No problema my bros!  Crab site is not to far for the PB.  We will just do more trips to get everybody's pot down weather permitting of course.  But you have to remember the way pt. and be there for the pull of your pot.
