Does anyone here eat Mola Mola? Is it good? Really cool fish, some guy out of SC caught a 100 pounder and kept it, I thought it was disturbing, but to each his own.

When I read.. "The room is now filled with Mola Mola Killers." I was thinking about A Hulls turning into Mola killers and Andy frying them up on the beach.  :smt005

Check it out.

Ocean sunfish (mola mola)
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: animalia
Tim Klasson

Range:
Found throughout the world in all ocean waters. Generally lives deep out in the ocean alone but often comes to shallower water to forage and look for cleaner fish.

Predators:
orca whales
sea lions

Food sources:
jellyfish
sponges
Man-O-Wars

Adaptations:
Large size
Besides one or two special predators, parasites and humans, Sunfish have very little to worry about in the wild thanks to their large size and tough, scaly skin. They weigh on an average about 900Kg, around a ton.

Poisonous flesh
Like the puffer fish which it is related to, the mola can carry a deadly neurotoxin in its flesh. This makes it even more resistant to predation.

I've read that they were mostly gelatinous and yield so little actual meat that they weren't worth the hassle.....plus all the bad juju that comes along with killing em  :smt002

Agree,,,  bad juju to kill them.    I've often  swam up to them.   They will often allow you to touch them.  A very peaceful creature.

found this;
The Mola Mola is an actual fish but more commonly referred to as the Ocean Sunfish. It is currently the heaviest known bony fish in the world. Due to their size they are rarely attacked but are vulnerable to shark and orca attacks as well as humans fishing them, sometimes accidently. They are considered a delicacy in several asian countries, including Japan, but are banned from being fished in the European Union.

Interestingly they sometimes float sideways in a behavior described as horizontal basking. This may be where the legend of these fish rescuing shipwrecked sailors as one can imagine clinging to the side or even climbing atop the massive sideways fish.
Sometimes the fish isn't the only prize.
