I was curious what lures people have had success with hunting for Lings. I have a few 3 oz anchovy looking lures that have treble hooks in their tails that I put on the bottom of a rock cod rig, but have never landed anything on them. The only Lings I've ever caught have been on baited rock cod jigs, and that was years ago from a PB.

I have caught a few lings this year with a 4 oz lead head and a root beer 4 inch tail, nothing special looking, just clank it off the rocks and attract attention. Keep fishing, tight lines

Thanks Kent.
I won't give up, if there was no challenge it wouldn't be as much fun.

I use either a 3oz. or 4oz. lead head with a 6-8" scampi, preffering holloween, or neon green depending on the viz with a teaser some inches above it, works for me.

Thanks Pernicus, I'll add that to the shopping list.
Guess I should start keeping better notes on what I'm using, instead of "anchovy looking lures that have treble hooks in their tails"

Those anchovy-looking lures with treble hooks in their tails actually work!    :smt004
So much good lingcod territory in Nor Cal - in terms of potential for catching a really big one.  If you really want a big ling, why not run big and ugly all the time?  The fact is, you will catch less smaller fish, and less fish overall for that matter, but you will have a better chance at hammering a big ling or something else brave enough to attack your offering.  I'm talking $7 Kalins on a 6 ounce head, double-hook 6 ounce Panther Martin Trout, mooching whole herring or even anchovies...  Big and Ugly - throw some squid on their too.  Good luck.   :smt001

I use a 4-8oz iron with no bait.  The key with any jig is the action you present to the ling cod.  I have been kayak fishing for over 20 years and have caught an average of over 40 lings a year with a release rate of 90 percent.  This year I have caught them up to 40 inches so far.  Of course my brother tells me I am old school, but, I tell him why mess with success.  It took my brother 3 years before he caught his first keeper ling.  So be patient and when you figure out what works just keep repeating it.

thanks Jack,,,,,,,i just learned another tip(fact) = ACTION is the key!! :smt002  which is something i need to do more of......i usually(nowGETyourMINDSoutOFtheGUTTER :smt003) just bang the bottom once, lift & jerk it a couple times, then lay it back down. Rinse & Repeat.
May i ask what kind of action do you use with the Irons??   :smt004

The two best things I've found so far for lings.

A 4 to 6 ounce jig head chartreuse or bright green with a 9 inch swimbait chartreuse with a green and a blue top.  Pattern is called dorado.  The best thing to do is just drop it down and drift it.  Guess i use it as a search bait.  Caught tons of big lings this way.

The other thing of course is the iron.  I like to do three or four soft pumps and then one hard one and drop the rod tip right away so the lure flutters.  Helps to practice in the pool.

on metal jigs, I like to remove the big ass treble and replace with a single siwash open eye hook.  Get hung up less, easier to remove the hook from the fish, especially underlings, and gives you only one chance to snag your legs.  :smt001

I like and agree with all the above comments/recommendations. From my experience and IMHO, my most successful lures for lings this year have been 4-6oz lead heads matched with 5-6" swimbaits. Colors/patterns have vary from all white to baitfish imitations mainly with dark dorsal tops to lighter belly colors with a red to blood red somewhere in on the body.
