Hello fellow members of NCKA, I am writting this post as a fellow Abalone Diver and Ocean Lover asking and Urging all abalone divers to not harvest abalone from the sonoma coast till further notice due to the recent mass DIE OFF, If you are going to dive for abalone please do your hunting on the Mendocino coast which was not affected by this DIE OFF. By doing this it will give a break to the fishery till there can be a count and survey of how serve the DIE OFF is, no need to shoot ourselves in the foot we are all ready close to tripping the TAC Total Allowable Catch as per the ARMP. I know we are all in shock and our concerned about the current situation, and we all want a healthy fishery lets be proactive and do what we can to limit the impact to the Sonoma coast fishery for awhile. Thank you and have a great day.

I will post more details on this as the day goes, but I am sure alot of you are aware of it.

Here is an article in the Sonoma county PD be sure to read all 3 pages of it.

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article...gues-the-coast

Even CA diver Magazine has got on board
http://californiadiver.com/urgent-notice-on-sonoma-coast-abalone/

Thanks and have a great day.  Also if you care to folow this more closley join Norcal Underwater Hunters.com we have a on going thread and discussion on there on this issue.

The little amount of time left in this season really isnt going to make that big of a difference. There are alot of areas in Sonoma County that werent affected. Why would you propose not taking abalone in those areas? Huh?

all I am trying to say here is let do the best we can not to screw our selfs, with this die off every ablone will help towards the count and surveys. WE DO NOT WANT TO TRIP THE TAC ON THE ARMP ! TAC = total allowable catch and ARMP = Abalone resource managment plan.  if we do trip it it will not be good for the ab diving and rock picking comunnity. but to each there own.

Being a Mendo guy, I get a little nervous when you tell everyone to come harvest up here, so I'd like to add that folks should limit their take up here too, since the effort will be much heavier.........with everyone coming up here instead of Sonoma.

I talked to a local who said that abs washed up at Stump Beach which makes me sad...that's as far north as I've heard of.
I think we're all panicking too early. Let's wait for the bloom to clear and then assess the damage. Maybe it won't be as bad as we're all thinking. Telling everyone to shift their efforts to Mendo will have consequences.

I'm just thinking through the argument that I've heard time and time again that MPA's are supposed to help protect against catastrophic events ... hmmm.

What I would like to see is stepped up enforcement for the near future. That, is something we can do as a community. Call and report illegal activity to cal-tip. Get as much info as possible, but if there is only one item you can report, make it the plate number of their vehicle. A lot of us have GoPros and if footage of an illegal act is caught on video, by all means, disclose that in your report as well. I hope this is over quickly, and conditions are right for a speedy recovery, I really wanted to start diving with my son next year, and would hate to see another opportunity for our kids taken away. Just my 2 cents.
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

I'm sure everyone agrees, but what does this have to do with the red tide? As far as I can tell, NOBODY could have prevented this.

dude your "article" in CA diver is written by you.  Nice job of self referencing.   :smt044

If you're so concerned about it you should stop taking any large ab as those are going to have the largest spawning amounts and with the lower ab densities dispersal rates are going to be lower so the meet the minimum amount the larger breeder should be left.

I've heard different opinions about this. Some say that the larger abs aren't the most prolific spawners while some say they are. Anybody else know about this?

I still see a trip to Sea Ranch in my future. Need to drain some of the population of fish and abs. Hopefully I can make it up there in Oct as planned. Will post an invasion onf Sea Ranch when the time comes.
