Heading to Pillar Point this weekend with my 14' skiff to take wife and son to the beach. I want to do some fishing while at the harbor but can't really take the time to go outside with the family (plus boat is too small for anything away from the jetty).

Is there anything worth fishing for inside the harbor? Where should I try if I want to sit at anchor with pole in the water?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks guys.

Current flow clears a channel in and out of the outter jettys....occasonally halibut are picked up around the channel ledges on the inside.  Might also pick up some small rockies plugging just outside the jetty mouth if its calm enough (keep your head on a swivel though).
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

Thanks. I've tried the sandy area along the inside of the outer jetty once before but didn't find anything (I've heard butts will come in there). Also jigged along the inside and outside face of the outer jetty near the inlet for rock fish, again nothing, but wasn't there very long.

there's rockfish inside of the jetty walls on both the north and south jetties. but they will be right up against the jetty, and it has to be on the tides.  they generally are not very big but once in a while you'll find a keeper black or brownie.  i probably wouldnt jig since its not very deep there, cast some small soft plastics right up (i mean right up) against the rocks and you might pick a few up.  its definitely not lights out but they're in there.

If you just want to put your kid on some fish for the sheer joy of catching, you'll find endless croaker action in the harbor among the boats and pilings.  Also depends on if the chovies/sardines is running thick, then its sabiki time to jig for bait

I haven't fished there for a few years, but yes there are lots of small rockfish tucked into the little nooks and crannies in the jetty. Spinning setup, 6lb test, small bass plastics = a fun couple of hours.
